Southern Illinois Miners News Release

MARION, ILL. (JULY 8, 2014) - The Southern Illinois Miners got another dominant start from MATT BYWATER on Tuesday night at Rent One Park, as he went eight shutout innings and was backed by two sacrifice flies in a 2-0 victory, his fourth of the season.

The Miners scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take the opening game of a series at Rent One Park for the 10th time in 11 tries this season. FRANK MARTINEZ led off the fourth with a single, followed by a walk by RYAN CAVAN and a bunt single by PHIL BUTLER to load the bases with no one out. CHRIS BURKE then hit a sacrifice fly to left to make it 1-0 Miners.

In the fifth, MATT HOWARD led off with a triple to left-center and he was driven in later in the inning by Martinez to make it 2-0 Miners.

That was all Bywater needed, as he got better as the game went along.

Windy City got six baserunners against the left-hander in the first three innings, but just two more the rest of the way. It is the first time this season Bywater has not surrendered any runs in a game that was not affected by weather (his start at Windy City on June 27th was suspended in the third due to rain).

DERRICK MIRAMONTES then pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning with two strikeouts to earn his 11th save of the season for Southern Illinois, which improved to 25-21 on the season with the win while handing Windy City (16-29) their fifth loss in a row.

The Miners will look to take the series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. MIGUEL RAMIREZ will be on the hill for Southern Illinois opposed by Windy City's Daniel Cropper.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2012 Frontier League Champions and have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception. They also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season. For ticket information, please contact the Rent One Park box office at 618-998-8499.
