San Francisco Dragons News Release
Burlingame, CA - San Francisco Dragons attackman Jake Byrne and captain defenseman Eric Martin have been selected to play in the seventh annual Major League Lacrosse All-Star Game on July 17th. The All-Stars were selected by the League's head coaches, general managers and players. This is the second season that MLL players have had a chance to be involved in the voting process.
This is Martin's second appearance at the MLL All Star game and Byrne's first.
Martin (Salisbury State University, 2004) is in his third year with the Dragons having previously played in Rochester. Martin leads the Dragons in groundball and has played in all 6 games this season.
"Being selected to the All Star team is exciting. It has been a tough year for our team," said Eric Martin. "We haven't been as successful as I would like so getting that personal acknowledgment from the league feels good. I am looking forward to playing in the All Star game. I had a great time last year."
Byrne (John's Hopkins University, 2007) is in his second year as a Dragon after being a 2nd round (18th overall) pick in the 2007 MLL Collegiate draft. He leads the Dragons in scoring with 19 points (12 goals, 3 2pt goals and 4 assists.) He is tied in first place in the MLL in 2 pointers. Byrne has also scooped up 9 ground balls this season.
"This is exciting to be selected. It is a surprise and great honor." Byrne remarked. "It will be pretty cool to be playing with these guys. They are so good and are guys I have looked up to over the years."
"We are really proud of both Jake and Eric for being selected to represent the West in this year's All Star Game in Denver, both are certainly very deserving of this honor," said Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Locker. "We are excited that they are representing the Dragons in this event"
The All Star game will take place on Thursday, July 17, 2008 at 8:00 PM MT at Denver's INVESCO Field at Mile High. For the second consecutive year, the game will match-up players from the Eastern Conference against their Western Conference counterparts.
"I'm really looking forward to traveling to Denver for this event," said MLL Commissioner David Gross "In addition to our perennial All-Stars, there are a number of players who will be making their first appearance at an MLL All-Star Game and I hope that they enjoy this unique experience. It's the one game during the season where the pressure is off and the guys can really just go out there and have some fun."
The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2 with Joe Beninati and Quint Kessenich calling the action and will once again feature the popular Bud Light Skills Competition during halftime.
Tickets to the event are on sale now and begin at just $10 for general admission. Individual tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster by calling 303-830-TIXS (8497) or online at www.ticketmaster.com. Group tickets are available by phone by calling 303-Outlaws.
