Maywood Buzz News Release
Fairbanks, AK - When the horn sounded and the Buzz had just finished off the Las Vegas Aces, Head Coach Burrel Lee III of the Maywood Buzz knew that the next game wouldn't be easy. "When they informed me that our game today would be vs the San Francisco Rumble, I just knew that we would be in for a dogfight" stated Lee. "We have had some great games last season and many were close and went down to the wire" Lee added. Well here we are Saturday night in Fairbanks, Alaska and we had just that, a great game against two teams who coaches and players both respect each other. The Buzz and Rumble played to a 24-24 first quarter tie and the half ended with Maywood leading 56-46.
The Rumble came out and out scored the Buzz by 13pts to lead by 3pts going into the final period of the game. Rumble guard Derek Foster who scored a game high 37pts, hit shots from behind the arc, in the paint, pretty much any where he can get a shot off. But Buzz Rookie guard Wesley Stokes (23pts) who played at both the University of Missouri and San Diego State came to the bench and asked to put the ball in his hands and he will carry the load after Ken Wright (11pts) went down with a sprained ankle mid way in the 4th period. Stokes knifed his way for lay-ups, found Isaac Burton (33pts) who caught fire at the right time, setting up Joey Saavedra (13pts) who hit a 3pt in the corner to put the Buzz up by 2pts and then finally sealing the Buzz win hitting 2 clutch free throws to put them up 6pts and a last second three pointer by Dante Sawyer (20pts) gave the Buzz the 110-113 win.
The Maywood Buzz who are 2-0 will do battle with the Alaska Dream who is also 2-0 after knocking off the Las Vegas Aces 147-104. The Championship game is set for 5:30pm here in Alaska.
This will be the Buzz final tune-up game before they open the new 2008-2009 ABA Season at home next week, Friday, November 28th, 2008. "We would like to finish our Pre-Season 6-0 heading into the season and if we win this tournament, maybe even start the season ranked #2 behind the Nashville Broncs" says Lee.
