Buddy's Book Club Celebrates 5th Summer

ST. JOHN'S, NL - The St. John's IceCaps launched the fifth annual Buddy's Book Club -Presented by Statoil, today at St. Peter's Primary School in Mount Pearl.

The program promotes summertime reading among elementary students in the province as Buddy's Book Club members are encouraged to read 20 minutes daily during their school vacation period. By reaching this goal, each child accumulates 20 hours of reading.

"The St. John's IceCaps are very happy to partner with Statoil for our fifth summer of promoting the joys and benefits of reading"," said IceCaps COO Glenn Stanford. "Reading is integral to all learning and it's important that children continue to develop these skills outside the traditional classroom setting."

Buddy's Book Club enables students and their parents to download a reading tracking sheet from the IceCaps website to follow their progress. Participants will be eligible for various prize packages through the hockey club.

"Statoil is proud that for the last five years, we have supported youth literacy through our partnership with the IceCaps and Buddy's Book Club," said Gisle Stjern, Vice President, Statoil Canada, Offshore Newfoundland. "Statoil believes developing the talents of youth in our province is critical to our long-term success, and that we can help achieve this by encouraging an early love of learning and reading."

Radio host Katie Beehan from Coast 101.1 - Buddy's Book Club media partner - was also on hand for the festivities.

Participants can register through www.stjohnsicecaps.com and be eligible for numerous prizes, to be announced at a later date.
