Laredo Bucks News Release
LAREDO, Texas â The 2004 CHL President's Cup Champion Laredo Bucks officially opened training camp on Monday morning with an on-ice workout at the Laredo Entertainment Center. The Bucks skated twice on Monday as they started preparations for the 2004-05 CHL season. For Laredo Bucks season or single game tickets call (956)-718-BUCKS (2825) or log onto www.laredobucks.com.
Local TV sports reporter Mireya Villarreal, from NBC Pro8News, got a taste of the ice as she signed a contract for the day and officially tried out for the Bucks.
"I couldn't really skate very well," quipped Villarreal. "I couldn't really handle the puck very well either, but I am still a little disappointed that I didn't make the Bucks team."
The story will air Monday night at 10 p.m. on Pro8News.
"I have a spot open for Mireya. Equipment Manager," joked Bucks head coach Terry Ruskowski.
Villarreal, who was a great sport about the tryout, has prior experience with the Bucks. Last season she tried out for the team as a goalie.
"Things went pretty well today," Ruskowski said. âWe had some guys who stood out, and a few who didn't. With only four days until the pre-season game this Friday night, guys have to show me something quick. We have 28 guys in camp, which means we have to cut 10. I asked the guys to make the cuts hard on me by putting in a good effort."
The Bucks will skate twice a day Tuesday â Thursday this week. On Tuesday the Bucks will skate in two groups in the morning from 9-10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.â12:30 p.m. The Bucks will return for an evening workout from 5-6:30 p.m.
