
Bucks Fall 5-4 In Overtime To Killer Bees

HIDALGO, Texas - The Laredo Bucks fell 5-4 in sudden death overtime as Aaron Phillips scored a pair of goals, including the game winner in overtime on Sunday night at the Dodge Arena in front of 4,909 fans. The Bucks picked up a point despite trailing going to the third period for the fourth time this season. Laredo is now 15-8-3 with a Southeast Division and Southern Conference best 33 points. The Bucks return home Friday night against the Austin Ice Bats. Face off is set for 7:30 p.m. Fans can take advantage of four tickets for forty dollars. The Bucks wasted no time getting the early lead as forward Steve Simoes cut down the left wing and centered to forward Brett Arcand-Kootenay who tipped it into the cage at 2:08 for a 1-0 Laredo advantage. It was the fifth of the season for Arcand-Kootenay. Rio Grande Valley answered on a power play as defenseman Jeff Mushaluk teed up a big slap shot top shelf from the top of the right circle at 6:33. The Bucks came back on a power play chance of their own. Forward Chris Grenville ripped a slap shot from the top of the right circle for a five-on-three goal at 13:39. Grenville's ninth of the season gave the Bucks a 2-1 lead. Late in the period Rio forward Bobby Davis swooped up a loose puck, cut to the bottom of the left circle and scored on a wrist shot to tie the game at 18:20.
The Killer Bees took their first lead early in the second period. Forward Trevor Weisgerber picked up a loose puck in the slot and wristed it home at 4:24. Rio Grande Valley then added to their lead as Weisgerber found forward Aaron Phillips in the slot on a power play for a one-time goal at 14:28 making it 4-2 Killer Bees. Rio out shot the Bucks 22-7 in the second period. The 22 shots tied a Laredo franchise record for most shots allowed in a period.
In the third period the Bucks put on furious pressure. Defenseman Steve Weidlich got the Bucks within one goal as he ripped a slap shot from just inside the blue line at 3:05 to make it a 4-3 game on his fifth of the season. Just under five minutes later it was forward Jeff Bes tying the game with a one-timer on the power play at 8:02 on his ninth. The Bucks out shot the Killer Bees 18-8 in the period to force overtime.
In overtime Phillips scored his second of the game, this time off a face-off with just 30 seconds left in sudden death. FINAL SCORE Rio Grande Valley 5, Laredo 4 sudden death.
