LAREDO, Texas â The Laredo Bucks beat the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs 6-3 Sunday night in front of 5,804 fans at the Laredo Entertainment Center. Forward Patrik Nilson had a pair of goals and goalie David Guerrera stopped 29 of 32 shots to lead the Bucks to their sixth straight win. The Bucks have tied a franchise record with 12 straight wins on home ice. Laredo is 30-5-2 with a CHL and Southeast division leading 62 points. Laredo is on the road this Friday at Corpus Christi. The Mudbugs picked up the only goal of the first period on the power play. Forward Chad Spurr fluttered a wrist shot from the left circle that came thru traffic and snuck under the cross bar at 17:54.
Early in the second period the Bucks tied the game. Forward Jason Spence whipped a pass backdoor for forward Max Birbraer who out waited Mudbugs goalie Ken Carroll and then went top shelf for his ninth of the year at 1:45. Less than three minutes later the Bucks went to work on the power play. Forward Patrik Nilson skated in from the left circle and fired a wrist shot into the net at 4:23 to give the Bucks their first lead of the night. Just 56 seconds later it was Nilson again this time poking the puck into the net on a wild scramble at 5:19 for his second of the night and 19th of the year.
As fast as Laredo took the lead the Mudbugs came back. Defenseman Travis Bell fired the puck into the net at 6:50 when Bucks goalie David Guerrera was knocked over in a collision. Seventy one seconds later it was defenseman Jim Sprott blasting home a five-on-three power play goal to tie the game at 8:01 of the second.
The momentum then swung back to Laredo as 14 seconds after the Bugs tied it, the Bucks retook the lead. With Bossier-Shreveport still on the power play Laredo forward Jeff Bes broke down the right wing and tried to slip a pass across to forward Brent Cullaton. Bes' pass hit the skate of Bugs defenseman Craig Minard and banked into the net at 8:15 for a 4-3 Laredo advantage. It was the 21st of the year for Bes and the Bucks CHL leading 12th shorthanded tally of the season. Later in a wild second the Bucks struck again. During a four-on-four stretch forward Serge Dube cut down the slot and backhanded a shot by Carroll at 11:47. It was Dube's eighth of the year. The Bucks tied a franchise record with five goals in the period.
In the third period the Bucks played solid defense down the stretch. With less than a minute to go forward Chris Grenville sealed the game with an empty net goal. Grenville has goals in 10 of the last 11 games and six straight. FINAL SCORE Laredo 7, Bossier-Shreveport 3.
Guerrera was outstanding in the pipes as he stopped 29 of 32 shots to improve to 15-3-0. Carroll was beaten for five goals on 36 shots as he dropped to 15-7-2. The Bucks were 1-7 on the power play while the Mudbugs were 1-5.
