Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees forward Bill Newson registered his team leading sixth two-goal performance Sunday afternoon to lead the Killer Bees past the Austin Ice Bats 3-2 in an important Southeast Division battle at Austin's Travis County Expo Center. The victory ended the Bees five game winless streak.

All-star Bill Newson gave the Bees a 2-1 first period lead with a pair of special team goals. As the Bees were on a 5-on-3 power play advantage, Killer Bees defenseman Sean Gillam fired a shot from the point that deflected off of traffic and landed right on the stick of Newson in the left circle. Newson had no problem lifting it past Bats goaltender Jonathan Forest, giving the Bees a 1-0 lead. Ice Bats forward Brett Seguin was able to grab a loose puck away from Bees goaltender Jeff Levy to tie the game at 1-1 with 13:29 remaining in the period before Newson picked up his second shorthanded goal of the season and team leading 20th goal overall with a blast from the right circle to regain the Bees lead.

Each team added a goal late in the second period of play, led off with Matic Kralj taking control of a Bats turnover in the Bees attacking zone and feeding Chris Peach, who launched a slap shot into the top shelf with 1:06 remaining. Austin wouldn't allow the Bees to have the two-goal advantage for long, as Shawn Legault rattled a rocket off the crossbar into the back of the net with 15-seconds remaining in the period. It was a 6-on-5 even strength goal as the Bats had an extra attacker on the ice while there was a delayed penalty signaled by official Paul DePuydt against the Bees.

Levy stopped all nine Ice Bats shots in the third period to preserve the Killer Bees 3-2 victory, improving the Bees record to 15-14-6 and positioning them one standing point behind the Bats, with a game-in-hand, for second place in the Southeast Division. The Bees are now 12-1-0 when scoring first and 10-0-1 when leading after the second period. This was just the second one goal regulation loss (out of 15 regulation losses) for the Bats this season and they have both come against the Killer Bees.

The Killer Bees continue their four game road trip Tuesday morning with an early 10:40 AM face-off in Fort Worth against the Fort Worth Brahmas. Austin is off on Tuesday, so a Bees victory over Fort Worth would place the Bees back in second place of the division.
