LAREDO, Texas – The defending CHL Champion Laredo Bucks beat the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 5-3 at the Laredo Entertainment Center in front of 5,002 fans. The Bucks ended a two-game losing streak as forward Steve Simoes scored a pair of goals as they improved to 19-17-2 with 40 points and remain in third in the Southeast Division. Laredo is home on Friday night again taking on the Killer Bees. Face off is set for 7:30 p.m. For Laredo Bucks season or single game tickets call (956)-718-BUCKS (2825) or log onto www.laredobucks.com and buy tickets online.

The Killer Bees scored an early goal on a power play chance when defenseman Josh Mizerek gunned a shot from the point into the net at 5:59. The Bucks then came back despite another Rio power play chance. Working on killing a four minute double minor Bucks forward Steve Simoes cut into the Killer Bees zone and fired a wrist shot from just inside the left circle that snuck into the net low glove side to tie the game at 11:38. It was the seventh of the year for Simoes. The Bucks then had to work harder on the penalty kill as it turned into a full two-minute two-man Killer Bees advantage. After the Bucks killed off the extended penalty they went to work on their own power play chance. Bucks forward Mark Wires cut into the zone and got to the slot where he snapped a wrist shot high glove side into the net at 18:58 for a 2-1 Bucks lead.

The Killer Bees wasted no time tying the game in the second. Rio Grande Valley forward Joe Guenther scored on a wrist shot just 1:17 into the period to even the score. The Bucks came back as Simoes was at it again, this time he skated down the right wing, muscled thru a hook and cut into the slot where he wrapped the puck into the back of the net at 4:19 for his second of the game and a 3-2 Laredo lead.

The Bucks opened up the lead to 4-2 when forward Eric Sonnenberg scored 5:53 into the third period on a rebound. It was the first goal for Sonnenberg since joining the Bucks from Texas. The Killer Bees chopped into the lead with a five-on-three power play goal as defenseman Jason Tessier ripped home a slap shot at 10:39. That was as close as Rio Grande Valley would come as Bucks forward Hans Benson capped the scoring with a nice backhander at 13:51. It was the fourth of the year for Benson. FINAL SCORE Laredo 5, Rio Grande Valley 3.

Bucks goalie Jeremy Symington stopped 21 of 24 shots to improve to 12-7-1. Jeff Levy took the loss allowing five goals on 39 shots to fall to 10-18-1. The Bucks were 1-3 on the power play while Rio Grande Valley was 2-7.
