DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- How many football coaches have a dog race named in their honor?

Daytona Beach Hawgs Head Coach/General Manager Ervin Bryson had one Friday night when the Daytona Beach Kennel Club and Poker Room declared the eighth race "The Ervin Bryson Cup" as the National Indoor Football League franchise and the popular greyhound racing track celebrated their sponsorship partnership.

Bryson presented the winner's trophy to the owners of Oz Sum Luck, a 6-1 shot that covered the 5/16 mile course in 31.48 seconds and paid $14, $12.80 and $12.40.

"This is awesome,'' Bryson said. "I'll be honest -- I didn't know the first thing about dog racing but I had a terrific time. This is a first-class operation. The Daytona Beach Kennel Club and Poker Room is going to be a great partner to Hawgs football."

Daytona Beach Kennel Club and Poker Room purchased a corporate box on the floor of the Ocean Center for the Hawgs' seven home games in addition to sponsorship opportunities. The two groups will cross-promote throughout the 2005.

"We think the Daytona Beach Hawgs are an exciting addition to the area and the Daytona Beach Kennel Club and Poker Room are thrilled to be associated with this new venture,'' said General Manager Dan Francati. "We're looking forward to having the Hawg players and the Harleigh Girls visit us here."

The Hawgs open their inaugural season March 19 on the road at Lakeland, with the home opener March 24 against New Jersey. Season tickets are available by calling the Ocean Center box office at (386) 254-4545.
