Bryan Brothers Advance to Miami Open Semis, Kastles at the White House

March 31, 2016 - World TeamTennis (WTT)
Washington Kastles News Release

The 2016 Washington Kastles roster is set after the completion of the 2016 WTT Draft last week and the team is gearing up for action in D.C. with success on the ATP and WTA Tours in Miami in recent days.

Bob and Mike Bryan, two of the best doubles players in the sport's history, have advanced to the Miami Open semifinals with a straight sets win against Omar Jasika and John-Patrick Smith 6-3, 6-4 on Wednesday. Up next, the Americans face the 5th-seeded Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut.

Last year, the Bryan brothers won the event and have collected the title another three times during their illustrious careers. This year, they're going for their third Miami title in a row.

The Bryans have won 16 Grand Slam doubles titles, over 100 ATP tournament titles and the 2012 Olympic gold medal. The brothers have played WTT for 13 seasons and are joining the Kastles for the very first time this year.

With a Kastles team that would rival the best Davis Cup teams, the American duo will play for the Kastles on August 1st along with countrymen Sam Querrey and Mardy Fish before heading to Rio to join the United States Olympic team. It will be a night that you won't want to miss!

Madison Brengle, who is coming back to the Kastles for her second season, advanced to the third round in singles. In the first round, Brengle defeated the hard-hitting, world No.41 Italian Camila Giorgi 6-4, 6-3. She then upset the No.28 seed Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 7-5, 6-4 before falling to No.3 Agnieszka Radwanska in straight sets.

While world No.1 doubles player Martina Hingis with partner Sania Mirza had a disappointing second round loss in Miami, she has been on a tear on the WTA Tour in recent months. She started the year by claiming the Australian Open title in doubles as well as wins in Sydney and St. Petersburg and she enjoyed a 41-match winning streak that started at the US Open and ended just last month at the Qatar Open. She also had a huge number of wins in 2015, claiming doubles titles at the WTA Finals, the U.S. Open, Wimbledon, Beijing, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Charleston, Miami and Indian Wells.

In addition, Hingis teamed up with Kastles veteran Leander Paes to win three Grand Slam mixed doubles events, including at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. She's also set to compete for the Kastles before heading to the Olympics in Rio to represent Switzerland.

Anastasia Rodionova, the 2015 WTT Female Co-MVP who is coming back to the Kastles for her fifth straight season, advanced to the second round in doubles. Meanwhile, Sam Querrey, who bowed out in the first round of doubles, advanced to the second round in singles.
