Broncos provide plenty of offense in win

Laredo, TX-The Laredo Broncos made their July 4th memorable with a 12 run 5th inning as they defeated the Harlingen WhiteWings by the score of 15-13 on Friday night in Laredo at Veterans Field. The Broncos wrap up their 6 game home stand with a doubleheader starting at 5 pm against the WhiteWings on Saturday night. For more information you can call (956)-723-BASE (2273).

The WhiteWings got on the scoreboard first in the top of the 2nd inning. David Cardona led off with a single and scored on a 2 run home run by David Fowler, his 6th of the season. Amadeo Zazueta would follow and reach base on an error by shortstop Arnoldo Ponce. Zazueta would then steal 2nd base. After two outs, Anthony Slagle and Matt Kramer walked to load the bases. Ryan Fox would then single which would knock in Zazueta. Argelis Nunez would then clear the bases hitting a grand slam, which was his 9th home run of the season. That would give Harlingen the early 7-0 lead. 5 of the 7 runs that scored in the inning were unearned.

The Broncos would score for the 1st time in the bottom of the 3rd inning. With one out, Dwayne White hit a solo home run, his 7th of the season. Edgard Clemente would follow with a single and then score on a 2 run home run by Luany Sanchez, his 13th of the season. That would make the score 7-3. For Luany Sanchez, that was his 5th consecutive game with a home run.

Broncos starter Gregorio Martinez would leave the game after his 3 innings of work. He gave up 7 runs 5 of which were earned on 5 hits. He walked 4 batters and struck out 5. Nathan Crawford would come into the game for Laredo.

The Broncos threatened to have a big inning in the bottom of the 4th. Eric Padilla and Anthony Bennett started off the inning with back to back walks. After a sacrifice bunt by Steven Wright, Arnoldo Ponce was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Dwayne White would then come up and hit into the 4-6-3 double play to end the threat and keeping the score 7-3 in favor of Harlingen.

The WhiteWings would extend their lead back to 7 in the 5th inning. Joel Gonzalez led off with a single. Then walks to both Kevin Griffin and Anthony Slagle loaded the bases. Nathan Crawford would get Matt Kramer to strike out, but gave up a sacrifice fly to Ryan Fox which scored Gonzalez. Then Argelis Nunez would double in both Griffin and Slagle to give Harlingen the 10-3.

Laredo would then explode in the bottom of the 5th inning. Edgard Clemente would lead off the inning with a single. Clemente would then go to 3rd on a double by Luany Sanchez. Ben Tinius would then reach base on an error by 1st baseman Kevin Griffin, which loaded the bases. Ivan Reyes would draw a walk to force in Clemente. Eric Padilla then hit a tailor made double play ball, but the 2nd baseman Anthony Slagle couldn't handle it and Sanchez scored and everyone else was safe. Anthony Bennett would then hit a sacrifice fly scoring Tinius. Steven Wright would then connect on a 3 run home run, his 3rd of the season. That would chase WhiteWings starter Bobby Darling as they brought in Brandon Kling. Kling did not have much luck as both Aronldo Ponce and Dwayne White would reach on errors by the 2nd baseman Slagle. Ponce would go to 3rd on the 2nd error. Clemente would come back up and hit a rbi single scoring Ponce. Sanchez would follow with a single of his own scoring White from 2nd and moving Clemente to 2nd. Tinius then singled to load the bases. Reyes would then hit a grand slam home run, his 7th home run of the season. That would cap off the 12 run inning for the Broncos as they now lead the game 15 to 10.

Rhett Barber would then come into the game and relieve Nathan Crawford in the top of the 6th inning. David Fowler would double to lead off the inning. After 2 outs and Kevin Griffin batting, Barber threw a wild pitch to allow Fowler to move to 3rd. Kevin Griffin would strike out, but the ball got by Luany Sanchez for a drop 3rd strike which allowed Griffin to reach 1st and Fowler to score. That would make the score 15-11.

Barber would leave the game after the 7th inning, going 2 innings and giving up the 1 run on 1 hit. He walked 0 batters and struck out 2. He would be in line for the win. David Waslyak would pitch a scoreless 8th inning. Rusty Jones would then pitch the 9th inning. Jones gave up a lead off double to Kevin Griffin. With 2 outs and Ryan Fox batting, Jones would throw 2 straight wild pitches allowing Griffin to score. Fox would then hit a solo home run, his 7th of the season. But then he would get Argelis Nunez would then strike out and end the game giving the Broncos the 15-13 victory. The Broncos scored 15 runs on 15 hits and committed 4 errors, while the WhiteWings scored 13 runs on 11 hits and committed 5 errors.

The Broncos improve to 25-24 on the season. The Broncos will be back in action on Saturday night when they play a doubleheader to wrap up the 3 game set against the Harlingen WhiteWings at Veterans Field at 5 pm.
