BOUCHERVILLE, Monday, January 23, 2006 (QMJHL) - Forward David Brine of the Halifax Mooseheads and goaltender Brandon Verge of the St. John's Fog Devils were named offensive and defensive players of the week for the period extending from January 16th to 22th, 2006.
In two games, Brine tallied two goals, including one game-winner, and three assists, while maintaining a 63.5% success rate in the face-off circle. Moreover, last Friday, in front of 8,644 fans in Halifax, he scored the lone shootout goal to secure a 4-3 win over the PEI Rocket, earning himself the game's first star. The next day, in Saint John, Brine scored his 25th goal of the season against his former teammate, Jason Churchill, in another 4-3 win. The Mooseheads forward has seventy points in forty-six games this season. Furthermore, five of his goals have been game-winners and he's been perfect during shootouts, scoring on all three tries. The Mooseheads will host both Rimouski and Lewiston, next Wednesday and Thursday before leaving for PEI for a Sunday game.
Yannick Riendeau (2-3-5) of Rouyn-Noranda, Olivier Latendresse (2-3-5) of Val-d'Or and Olivier Labelle (3-1-4) of Acadie-Bathurst were also considered.
The defensive player of the week award goes to Brandon Verge of St. John's. In two contests, the Fog Devils goaltender collected two wins and registered a 2.00 goals-against-average, while maintaining a .944 save percentage. In the first of back to back games against the Screaming Eagles on Saturday, Verge stopped thirty-five shots in a 2-1 win, collecting the game's second star behind Cape Breton netminder Ondrej Pavelec, and thus breaking their six game winning streak. The next day, the St. John's backstop made thirty-two saves in a 5-3 win in front of 4,173 fans at Mile One Stadium. It was the Fog Devils' fourth consecutive win at home. Their next game is next Wednesday as they visit the MAINEiacs in Lewiston.
Other players considered for the defensive player of the week award were defensemen Ivan Vishnevskiy (2-2-4) of Rouyn-Noranda and Kristopher Letang (1-5-6) of Val-d'Or as well as goaltender Jean-Philippe Levasseur (2-0-0; 120 MP; 1.50 GAA; .946 SAV%) of Rouyn-Noranda.
