Bridgeport takes on Somerset

(Bridgewater, NJ- June 8, 2017) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (27-21) defeated the Somerset Patriots (28-19) 4-1 at TD Bank Ballpark on Thursday evening to take the rubber game of the three-game midweek series in the Garden State. The victory puts the Bluefish back to within a game and a half of first place in the First Half of the Liberty Division Standings.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Rainy Lara (4-2) earned the win, allowing just one run on five hits in six innings of work, striking out seven, registering his fifth quality start in 2017. Somerset Starting Pitcher David Kubiak (2-5) suffered the loss, surrendering three runs on four hits in five and one-third innings pitched, walking three and striking out six. David Carpenter closed the ballgame out for his Atlantic League leading 18th save of the season.

Somerset took a 1-0 lead against Lara in the home half of the second inning when Tyler Bortnick plated Yovan Gonzalez with an RBI groundout. Bridgeport evened the contest at one in the top of the fifth off Kubiak on an opposite field run-scoring single to right by Angel Rosa, allowing Jose Cuevas to come home, the first run batted for Rosa in a 'Fish uniform. The visitors took the lead for good in the top of the sixth, putting three runs on the board for a 4-1 advantage. Daniel Fields doubled over the head Greg Golson in right field, scoring D'Arby Myers after he began the rally with a two-base hit of his own into the left field corner. Making his Bluefish debut, Andrew Lambo's first Bridgeport hit gave the 'Fish some much needed insurance as he drove home Tony Abreu and Fields with a two-run base knock. The Bridgeport bullpen did the rest, as Zac Grotz, Brian Moran, Danny Burawa, Manny Delcarmen, and Carpenter did combined to fire three scoreless innings, striking out four. Fields and Luis Hernandez led the way for Bridgeport with two hits apiece.

Bridgeport returns to The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Tuesday, June 13th, when they welcome in the Lancaster Barnstormers for a three-game midweek series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:12 P.M.
