
Bridgeport Falls to Boston in Overtime

BRIDGEPORT, Conn., June 15, 2002 â The Bridgeport Barrage, Connecticut's only professional lacrosse team and a charter member of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), fell to the Boston Cannons 19-18 in overtime, before 3,064 fans at Harbor Yard on Saturday evening.
Boston's Mike Regan scored his first goal of the game 26 seconds into overtime to give Boston the victory after they had trailed by as many as four goals in the fourth quarter.
Paul Gait scored all three of Boston's goals in the fourth quarter including two consecutive two-point shots to bring Boston back after trailing 17-13 in the final quarter. Gait's second two point shot tied the game at 18-18 with under two minutes to play in regulation.
Roy Colsey (3g, 1a) scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter for the Barrage to notch his second hat trick of the season. Jim Gonnella netted his only goal of the game give the Bridgeport their largest lead in the fourth quarter, 17-13.
Matt Panetta (6g, 1a), the SOBE Iron Lizard award winner, connected on his fifth goal of the game on a pass from Dan Denihan(3g, 3a) to give the Barrage a 14-13 advantage with time winding down in the third quarter. Only ten second earlier Denihan knotted the score at 13-13 on a pass from Panetta. Boston grabbed the lead, 13-12, on a goal by Mike Battista (4g). The Cannons used one of their three, two-point goals of the game by Don Little and a score by Michael Watson to close the 12-9 advantage held by the Barrage.
Bridgeport used a three-goal flurry in a span of 46 seonds to take a 6-4 lead in the second quarter en route to scoring a season-high seven goals in that quarter. Bridgeport scored five unanswered goals to open the second quarter to seize a 8-4 lead. Denihan added a pair of goals that gave Bridgeport a lead that they never surrendered in the second quarter. Boston scored three of the next five goals to inch closer to the Barrage, 10-7 at the half.
The Barrage took their first lead in over seven quarters of play (had not lead since first quarter at Long Island on 6/2) with the first two scores of the game on goals by Panetta and Todd Eichelberger (1g). The rest of the quarter was a see-saw battle that included two ties and three lead changes. Boston seized a 4-3 lead at the end of the first quarter by scoring four of the next five goals on a pair of scores by Battista and goals by Brian Silcott (1g) and John Madigan (1g).
Bridgeport's Jim Mule made 21 saves in goal while Boston's Bill Daye also 21 saves while guarding the crease for Boston.
With the loss Bridgeport falls to 0-2 on the season while Boston improves to 2-0.
The Barrage will resume play on Friday, June 21 at 7:30 p.m. when they face the Baltimore Bayhawks at Dunning Field at Hawes Plaza in New Canaan, Conn. Bridgeport will then travel to Baltimore on Saturday to face the Bayhawks at Ravens Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
