
Bridgeport Bluefish Defeat Atlantic City, 3-2

(Bridgeport, Conn., May 7, 2003) â The Bridgeport Bluefish used a two-run eighth inning rally to defeat the Atlantic City Surf, 3-2, before 3,230 fans on Wednesday afternoon at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The victory marked the first 2003 come-from-behind win for the Bluefish.
Willis Otanez capped the eighth inning rally with by driving in the game-winning run with a two-out single to right field. His single scored Angel Espada from third base.
Wellington Sanchez (2-for-3) led off the eighth inning with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by Atlantic City second baseman Brandon Jackson. The next Bluefish batter, Espada, used a bunt single to push Sanchez over to third base. Rodney Lindsey (1-for-2, 2RBI) then tied the game at 2-2 with a sacrifice fly, scoring Sanchez. Ben Candelaria singled to right field, advancing Espada all the way to third base to set up the game-winning heroics by Otanez.
Atlantic City seized a 2-0 lead after tagging Bluefish starter Brad Cornett for solo home runs in the each of the first two innings. Vernon Spearman (2-for-4) led off the game with his first home run of the season in the first inning while Shane Monahan (2-for-4) led off the second frame with his first long ball of the year.
The Bluefish got one run back in the third inning on a solo home run by Rodney Lindsey. It was Lindsey's second home run as a member of the Bluefish.
Brad Cornett started for the Bluefish, but did not record a decision after going 7.1 innings while surrendering two runs on six hits (1BB, 4K). Terrence Hill (1-0) picked up his first win as a Bluefish after getting two outs to close out the eighth inning. Bridgeport's Mike Guilfoyle worked a perfect ninth inning to record his second save of the season. Atlantic City's Anthony Chavez (0-2) took the loss after hurling 7.2 innings while allowing three runs on five hits (1BB, 7K).
The Bluefish will resume play on Thursday at 6:35 p.m. in what will the third and final game of the series against Atlantic City. LHP Angel Miranda (0-0,13.50) will take the mound for Bridgeport while opposing Atlantic City's LHP Andy High (0-0,3.60).
