Philadelphia Barrage News Release

BRIDGEPORT, CONN., July 26, 2002 – The Bridgeport Barrage, Connecticut's only professional lacrosse team and a charter member of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), today announced that they have acquired attackman Tom Kessler and the rights to defenseman Rob Doerr from the Baltimore Bayhawks in exchange for Barrage defenseman Jamie Hanford.

The Barrage acquired the rights to Doerr, who started every game in 2001 en route to leading the Bayhawks to the 2001 MLL Championship. The Johns Hopkins graduate (class of 1999) started the first six games for the Bayhawks this season before leaving the team after being accepted into the New York Police Academy. Doerr was also a two-time All-American during his collegiate career in both his junior and senior seasons at Johns Hopkins.

Bridgeport also acquired Kessler, Baltimore's first-round selection (6th overall) in the 2002 MLL Collegiate Draft. Kessler has scored two goals this season for the Bayhawks after seeing limited playing time in two games. He graduated from Hofstra in 2002 where he was a Third Team All-American finishing his collegiate career as the school's all-time leading goal scorer (140).

Hanford, a native of Darien, Conn., departs Bridgeport after leading the Barrage in face-offs won (82) and ground balls (36) this season while anchoring the Barrage defense. The two-time MLL All-Star also led the team in ground balls (52) during the inaugural MLL season in 2001. He was a three-time All-American at Loyola where he started every game of his collegiate career. Hanford was originally drafted by the Barrage in the third round of the Inaugural MLL Draft.

Bridgeport will resume play on Saturday, July 27th at 7:00 p.m. when they face the Boston Cannons at Cawley Stadium in Lowell, Mass. The Barrage will return to Harbor Yard next Wednesday, July 31 at 7:00 p.m. when they host the Long Island Lizards. Long Island, the 2001 MLL Champions, own a 7-1 record this season and superstar players in Casey Powell and Terry Riordan. Tickets for the game are still available by calling 203-345-4800 ext. 150 or by visiting www.bridgeportbarrage.com.
