Edmonton Chill News Release
The Chill saw their first player foul out this year when Lee Scruggs drew his sixth on questionable call from the officials late in the fourth quarter. However the Chill had already built a double digit lead and this one they held on to until the final whistle for a blowout win over the Portland Chinooks, 130-111, for their fourth consecutive weekend sweep.
After the combined 85 first quarter points on Friday, the two teams played it much closer to the vest Saturday night as defense and sloppy offense were the order for the first 12 minutes. Portland came back from an early small deficit to take a slim 24-22 lead after one. The second quarter saw the Chinooks play similar ball with Larry Smith leading the charge as they scored another 28 in the quarter. The Chill however had other things in mind as Jermaine Bucknor exploded for 11 points, giving him 20 in the first half as the Chill opened up a 10 point halftime lead, 62-52.
The second quarter saw some serious action apart from the play on the floor. Chill guard Stephen Parker came up with a steal on the defensive end and then drew a hard foul on the other end from Dean Browne. Parker's younger brother Andrew came storming in and had a few words and pushes with Browne, both were given technical fouls. However, the Portland bench continued to jaw with the officials who eventually handed David Fischer a "T", and as the Chinooks continued their chatter, their head coach Terrence Dickens picked up the third technical for the visitors. Still, it did not end there. As the first half finished and the teams headed to the locker room, Coach Dickens' tirade continued and he was ejected from the game. As the teams returned to start the third quarter, Stephen Sir hit the free throw and the lead was 11. The Chill never looked back.
From there, the Chill played from way ahead leading at one point by 27. Chill head coach Paul Sir used the fourth quarter to get his reserves some extra minutes, including the newest member of the team Antwon Mills who was very effective in his 21 minutes, scoring nine points and collecting 8 boards. Jermaine Bucknor was the high scorer for Edmonton with 29, Lee Scruggs had another double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Alex Steele handed out seven assists. For Portland, Kenny Tate led the way with 21 and Dean Browne was among two Chinooks with double digit rebounds with 12.
