
Boston Cannons Visit New Jersey Pride On Friday

BOSTON, MA - Thursday, June 5, 2008 - The Boston Cannons (1-2) of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) will face-off against the New Jersey Pride (0-2) at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, New Jersey, on Friday, June 6 at 7:30 PM. The game is the second between the two teams in 2008, with the Cannons holding a 1-0 advantage in the season series.
CANNONS VS. NEW JERSEY IN 2008: Midfielder Matt Poskay (Virginia '06) collected three goals to earn Bud Light MVP honors as the Cannons defeated the New Jersey Pride by a score of 13-9, in the 2008 season-opening game in front of 8,706 fans at Harvard Stadium on May 17. The Pride dominated early in the game with four goals to take a 4-0 lead before Poskay got the home team on the scoreboard with a shorthanded goal at 11:39 in the first quarter. Poskay's goal started a string of eight unanswered goals by the Cannons, giving them a 8-4 lead until the Pride finally found the back of the net again in the third quarter. The Pride then tied the game at 9-9, but the Cannons kept them scoreless in the fourth quarter and went on another four-goal run during the frame to pull out a 13-9 victory. Goalie Kip Turner (Virginia '07) made eight saves on the 13 shots he faced during the second half of the game to earn the win for the Cannons. Goalie Jake Coon (Nazareth '00) stopped five of nine shots in the first half of the contest.
CANNONS' LAST GAME (MAY 31 AT LONG ISLAND): The Cannons were defeated in a close battle with the Long Island Lizards, in overtime by a score of 20-19, in front of 3,642 fans at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, New York, on May 31. The Cannons fought back to take a 19-18 lead with seconds left to play in the game after outscoring the opposition 7-3 in the fourth quarter, but the Lizards tied the score, 19-19, at 14:57 to send the game into overtime. After several chances for both teams, the Lizards ended the contest at 4:01 in the extra frame for a 20-19 victory. Newcomer attackman Sean Morris (UMass '06) collected eight points (2-6=8) in his Cannons debut and the team collected three two-point goals, with two from midfielder Joe Kostolansky (Hofstra '03) and one by midfielder Tom Zummo (NYIT '05). Goalie Kip Turner (Virginia '07) made 16 saves for the Cannons on the 36 shots he faced in the loss. Goalie Nick Murtha (Johns Hopkins '02) made 19 saves on 33 shots for Long Island before being replaced by Matt McMonagle (Cornell '07) at 7:05 in the final frame. McMonagle stopped three of the five shots he faced.
NEW JERSEY'S LAST GAME (MAY 31 AT DENVER): The Denver Outlaws returned home to INVESCO Field at Mile High on May 31 to defeat the New Jersey Pride by a score of 19-11. Attackman Ryan Powell (Syracuse '00) was named as the Bud Light MVP after scoring two goals with three assists in the victory. The Outlaws took a commanding 14-4 lead with an eight-point run over the first 11 minutes of the third quarter, but attackman Merrick Thomson (Albany '07) ended the run with a goal for the Pride, followed by another tally by attackman Chris Unterstein (Hofstra '06), to cut the deficit to 14-6. The two teams exchanged goals five times in the fourth quarter to give the Outlaws their second home win of the season. Thomson scored four goals and an assist to lead the Pride in the losing effort.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Highly touted midfielder Paul Rabil (Johns Hopkins '08), the first overall selection in the 2008 MLL Collegiate Draft, is expected to dress for the Cannons in Friday night's game...Goalie Kip Turner (Virginia '07) was named as the Cannons starter for 2008 on June 3...Attackman Sean Morris (UMass '06), a native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, collected eight points (2 goals, 6 assists) in his Cannons debut at Long Island on May 31...Attackman Matt Alrich (Delaware '04) leads the Cannons in scoring (12 points) and ranks tied for fourth in the league in goals (10) and tied for seventh in points (12)...Midfielder Joe Kostolansky (Hofstra '03) leads the Cannons and is tied for second in the league in two-point goals scored (2)...The Cannons are 7-9 against New Jersey all-time and 1-0 against the team this season...Midfielder DJ Andrzejewski (Penn '06) will miss Friday night's game due to injury.
CANNONS ON TV: Friday night's match-up between the Cannons and Long Island will air live locally on CN8.
This season marks the first time in the organization's history that all 12 Cannons games will be televised in the New England area, and 11 of the 12 games will be aired live. Three networks - Comcast SportsNet New England, CN8 and ESPN2 - will combine to televise the games.
