
Boston Cannons Kick-Off Memorial Day Weekend Against Rochester on Friday Night

BOSTON, MA - Thursday, May 22, 2008 - The Boston Cannons (1-0) of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), fresh off a 13-9 victory over the New Jersey Pride in their home opener on May 17, will take on the Rochester Rattlers (1-0) at Harvard Stadium on Friday, May 23 at 7:00 PM.
CANNONS VS. ROCHESTER IN 2007: The Cannons faced-off against the Rochester Rattlers twice during the 2007 season and were defeated in both contests against a Rattlers team who finished the season first in the Eastern Conference with a 9-3 record. Rochester's Joe Walters earned Bud Light MVP honors with five goals as the Rattlers edged the Cannons by a score of 17-11 at Harvard Stadium on July 19 in the first match-up between the teams, and the Rattlers also got the better of the Cannons in the final game of the season by a score of 20-10 on August 11.
CANNONS' LAST GAME (MAY 17 VS. NEW JERSEY): Midfielder Matt Poskay collected three goals to earn Bud Light MVP honors as the Cannons defeated the New Jersey Pride by a score of 13-9, in the 2008 season-opening game in front of 8,706 fans at Harvard Stadium on Saturday, May 17. The Pride dominated early in the game to take a 4-0 lead before Poskay got the home team on the scoreboard with a shorthanded goal at 11:39 in the first quarter. Poskay's goal started a string of eight unanswered goals by the Cannons, giving them a 8-4 lead until the Pride finally found the back of the net again in the third quarter. The Pride then tied the game at 9-9, but the Cannons kept them scoreless in the fourth quarter and went on another four-goal run during the frame to pull out a 13-9 victory. Goalie Kip Turner made eight saves on the 13 shots he faced during the second half of the game to earn the win for the Cannons. Goalie Jake Coon stopped five of nine shots in the first half of the contest.
ROCHESTER'S LAST GAME (MAY 17 AT LONG ISLAND): Bud Light MVP Jeff Zywicki led the Rochester Rattlers to a 16-10 victory over the Long Island Lizards by scoring six goals, including three markers in the game-winning run, while John Grant, Jr. added four goals in his season debut on Saturday, May 17. While Grant and Zywicki combined for 10 goals, Joe Walters and Colin Doyle each scored twice. Casey Powell also collected four assists to move past his brother Ryan into first place on the Rattler's all-time assist list with 122. Goalie Mike Levin made 18 saves for the Rattlers, who were outshot by a 44-39 margin. Chris Fiore led Long Island in the loss with three goals while Stephen Berger added two goals with an assist.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR: The first 2,000 fans in attendance on Friday will receive a Mike Powell bobble head doll...Midfielder Brett Bucktooth is scheduled to rejoin the Cannons in Friday night's game after winning the National Lacrosse League (NLL) championship with his indoor lacrosse team, the Buffalo Bandits, on May 17...The Cannons have a record of 7-7 all-time against Rochester...The Cannons will look to post back-to-back wins for the first time since the 2006 season tonight when they take on Rochester at Harvard Stadium...Second-year midfielder Brett Garber scored his first career MLL point, an assist on a goal by attackman Matt Alrich, followed by his first career MLL goal, as the Cannons posted a 13-9 victory against New Jersey on May 17...Alrich and defenseman Colin Hulme, a Framingham, MA native, each scored goals in their Cannons debut on May 17 after being acquired from San Francisco in the offseason...The Cannons have yet to name a starting goalie for the 2008 season, and will again use both of the goalies on their active roster - Jake Coon and Kip Turner - in Friday night's match-up...The Cannons have five new players on their 23-man roster to start the 2008 season...Midfielder DJ Andrzejewski will miss Friday night's game due to injury.
CANNONS ON TV: Friday night's match-up between the Cannons and Rochester is the first game of the 2008 season to be broadcast nationally on ESPN2. The game will air live beginning at 7:00 PM. Joe Beninati and Mark Dixon will call the action.
This season marks the first time in the organization's history that all 12 Cannons games will be televised in the New England area, and 11 of the 12 games will be aired live. Three networks - Comcast SportsNet New England, CN8 and ESPN2 - will combine to televise the games.
