Boston Cannons News Release
ROCHESTER, NY - The Cannons (5-1) suffered their first loss of the season, 17-16, in a rainy overtime thriller against the Rochester Rattlers (2-2) tonight at Sahlen's Stadium. Kevin Buchanan scored five goals and Ryan Boyle set the MLL assists record, but it was not enough to hold off Bud Light Player of the Game Ned Crotty and the Rattlers.
On the first goal of the game, Boyle tied the MLL assists record at 211 on Brad Ross's first goal of the season. Mike Stone scored with room on a pass from Paul Rabil before Jay Card put the Rattlers on the board. Buchanan scored on a Matt Poksay assist before returning the favor a minute later. Crotty beat Jordan Burke to keep the Rattlers within two, ending the quarter 4-2 Cannons.
Buchanan dominated the second quarter, scoring three goals including his third career two-point goal. Boyle set the MLL assists record (previously held by former Cannon Conor Gill) on Buchanan's fourth. Stone added his second of the game, but the Rattlers stayed even with goals from Card, Crotty, Kevin Drew and two from Steve DeNapoli to close the half down 9-7 to the Cannons.
The Rattlers owned the third quarter, outscoring the Cannons 7-2 to pull ahead. Rabil and Buchanan kept the Cannons alive with one goal apiece, but five different Rattlers scored to take a 14-11 lead into the final 15 minutes of play.
The Cannons regained control in the fourth quarter with two goals from Rabil and one each from Bill McGlone, Chris Eck and Stone, who completed his fourth consecutive hat trick. With two goals from Rochester in the quarter, regulation ended in a 16-16 tie.
After a possession for each team, Roy Lang scored his only goal on the first play out of a timeout, improving the Rattlers' record to .500 and ending the Cannons' nine-game winning streak going back to last season.
The Cannons return home to Harvard Stadium next Saturday, June 9 to take on the Long Island Lizards. More information and tickets are available at BostonCannons.com.
