Boston Cannons News Release
BOSTON, MA - The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) today announced their 23-man active roster and 3-man practice squad for the start of the 2008 season, according to Cannons Vice President and General Manager Mark Kastrud.
"It was a great training camp," said Cannons Head Coach Bill Daye. "I thought the team showed up ready to work hard, we saw some really good things and I'm excited to get the season started against New Jersey on Saturday."
Midfielder David Jenkins and defenseman Chris Passavia will return as the co-captains of the Cannons in 2008. Both players are Cannons veterans and former MLL All-Stars. Jenkins is entering his sixth season as a member of the squad and has been the Cannons' primary face-off midfielder for each of the past three seasons. He is also the Cannons all-time leader in groundballs with 327. Passavia, the Cannons Team MVP in 2007, is entering his fifth season with the team.
The lightning-fast Cannons offense in 2008 will be led by second-year Cannons attackman and last season's leading scorer Mike Powell, as well as fourth-year Cannons attackman John Christmas. The offseason addition of 6-3, 220-pound attackman Matt Alrich from San Francisco will add another dimension to the Cannons front line. Alrich appeared in 11 games for the Dragons in 2007 and finished the season tied for fourth on the team in goals (18) and ranked fifth in total points scored (22).
The Cannons offensive midfield will again feature midfielders Brett Bucktooth, Matt Poskay, Kevin Dougherty and Tom Zummo, while midfielders Ben DeFelice and rookie Josh Porcell can contribute positively on both offense and defense.
Defenseman Ray Megill and newly acquired defenseman Colin Hulme, a Framingham, MA, native who played in nine games for San Francisco as a rookie in 2007, can be used as short-stick defensive midfielders in certain situations. The duo will also provide depth to the Cannons' close defense.
This year's Cannons defense was upgraded in the offseason as well with the re-acquisition of defenseman Ryan Curtis. Curtis returns to the Cannons as a four-time Team Defensive Player of the Year, MLL's Defensive Player of the Year in 2003 and a five-time MLL All-Star defenseman. One of the original three players assigned to the Cannons when the team was launched in 2001, Curtis appeared in 74 out of 76 Cannons games from 2001-2006, the most of any Cannons player, and has established himself as one of MLL's best defenders. Passavia and defenseman Stephen McElduff will remain a part of the Cannons' defensive foundation this season.
The competition remains strong in goal for the Cannons, as neither of the two goalies on the active roster, Jake Coon and Kip Turner, are willing to relinquish the starting position. Coon, last year's starter for the Cannons, appeared in 11 games and posted a 4-6 record. Turner served as Coon's backup after being selected second overall in the 2007 MLL Collegiate Draft. He appeared in three contests and posted a record of 1-1. Coon and Turner will split time in Saturday's season-opening game versus New Jersey.
Attackman Brian Boyle, goalie Jared Corcoran and midfielder Nate Evans have all been assigned to the Cannons practice squad.
Midfielder DJ Andrzejewski will miss the beginning of the season with a back injury he suffered during the first weekend of training camp.

The Cannons are set to open the 2008 season at their home field of Harvard Stadium versus the New Jersey Pride on Saturday, May 17 at 7:00 PM. The game will air live on Comcast SportsNet New England.
