Boston Cannons News Release
BOSTON, MA - The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) have acquired attackman Matt Alrich and defenseman Colin Hulme from the San Francisco Dragons in exchange for attackman David Mitchell and a fourth-round selection (39th overall) in the 2008 MLL Collegiate Draft, Cannons Vice President and General Manager Mark Kastrud announced today.
"We are excited to now have Matt and Colin as members of the Cannons," said Cannons Head Coach Bill Daye. "Matt brings experience to our offense and gives us an added dimension on our attack because with his size he'll present match-up problems for some teams we face. He also gives us another two-point shooting threat. Colin is a very athletic defenseman that will provide depth to our close defense unit and can also be used as a short stick defense midfielder in certain situations, which will benefit the team tremendously."
"As always it's difficult to trade away players like David, however we feel that this trade strengthens our team in two critical areas," Daye added. "On behalf of the Cannons organization, I would like to thank David for his contributions last year during his rookie season and wish him the best of luck in the future."
Alrich, 26, appeared in 11 games for the Dragons in 2007 and finished the season tied for fourth on the team in goals (18) and ranked fifth in total points scored (22). He also collected one two-point goal, three assists and 14 groundballs. The 6-3, 220-pound native of Timonium, Maryland, had seven multi-point games during the 2007 season and scored two goals or more in six games. Alrich was selected as the Bud Light MVP for his season-high six-point game versus Denver on June 23.
Prior to his two-year stint with San Francisco, Alrich played in five games for the since-relocated Baltimore Bayhawks, the team who originally drafted him in the fourth-round (23rd overall) in the 2004 MLL Collegiate Draft.
A 2004 graduate of the University of Delaware, Alrich was a First Team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection during his senior season and participated in the North/South Senior All-Star Game. Alrich led the team in goals and points during both his junior and senior campaigns. He finished his collegiate career with 83 goals, including 14 hat tricks, and 20 assists.
Hulme, 22, played in nine games for the Dragons as a rookie in 2007 and collected 15 groundballs and one penalty minute. The 6-0, 220-pound native of Framingham, Massachusetts, was originally selected by the Dragons in the second-round (16th overall) of the 2007 MLL Collegiate Draft.
During his senior season at Colgate University in 2007, Hulme was named as the Patriot League Defenseman of the Year and voted to the All-Patriot League First Team for the second time, in addition to earning USILA Division-I All-American honorable mention honors for the second consecutive season and playing in the North/South Senior All-Star Game. As the anchor of the 20th ranked defense in the nation in goals allowed, Hulme finished his collegiate career with five goals, two assists and 162 groundballs in 60 games played.
The Cannons are scheduled to open training camp for the 2008 season at Harvard Stadium on April 26. They will then square-off against the New Jersey Pride at Harvard Stadium on May 17, as the first of seven home games this season.
Cannons 2008 Season Ticket Packages are on sale now and feature all three MLL playoff games as NB Zip MLL Championship Weekend returns to Boston, in addition to great seats at all seven Cannons home games this season.
