Boston Blizzard News Release

The Boston Blizzard, an expansion team of the ABA, was welcomed too the league by the Quebec Kebs of Canada in their inaugural game of the season. The game was a hard fought battle, but the Blizzard prevailed 106-93.

From the tip off it was fast paced action with the Blizzard leading after the first series 32- 28. The second quarter began a little differently with the Kebs sharp shooting Tony Weeden connecting from long range, back to back to take the led. The Blizzard had no answer for the Kebs as they continued to knock down shot after shot pulling away and gaining a ten point led. With five minutes too go in the second quarter, Head Coach Manu Sharma called a time out. His motivational method worked, as Blizzard big man David Shaw (Mt. Ida) began to punish the Kebs in the post, scoring eight points in a row. The Blizzards regained momentum going into the half up a point 44-43. David Shaw led the blizzards with 12 points and Jamaal Brooks (New Haven) right behind him with 10 at the halfway mark.

In the third the blizzard came out a little more battle tested. Steven Hailey (Boston College) turned it up a notch, breaking down the Kebs defense and finding Dave Shaw in low post scoring position each time. Blizzard defensive specialist Kenneth Jackson (Iona) held Kebs sharp shooter Tony Weeden scoreless for the last seven minutes of the third quarter.

The Kebs, still hanging on in the fourth quarter got ten points from slasher Samuel Audet-Sow in the first 5 minutes. The Blizzard proved too much to handle in the fourth quarter. Floor general Steve Hailey, sharp shooter Jamaal Brooks and big man Dave Shaw made plays all over the floor. "The Kebs played a hell of a game and we have a lot of work to do to make this a successful season", said Assistant Coach Roger Roberts. The final score of the game was 106-93, Boston.

The Blizzard were led by David Shaw with 32 points, 12 rebounds and 4 block shots. Jamaal Brooks contributed 20 points. Steven Hailey led the team in assists with 7, and also poured in 18 points. Kenneth Jackson and James Lambert (Assumption) added 11 points a piece off the bench.
