Snohomish County Explosion News Release
Monroe, WA- Frank Wagner Elementary, off of Main St. in downtown Monroe, was the site of the first big bang of 2008! The students and teachers of the West campus filed into the gym for the Tip-Off Assembly on Friday morning, January 18th. After Principal Robin Fitch quieted down her students, she introduced Snohomish County Explosion General Manager, Brad Sturlaugson. Sturlaugson talked about the importance of math now and in the future. He then showed a video of 2007 highlights of the team to introduce the new math program in the Monroe elementary schools, Boomer's Math Explosion, sponsored by the Canyon Creek Cabinet Company.
With the students excited to learn more about the Math Explosion, the man (or mascot) that the program is named after made his appearance. Boomer sprung out from behind a door throwing Explosion squishy balls into the crowd of ecstatic pupils. He then led the group in a "Go Boom" chant!
Next, Sturlaugson showed the children a PowerPoint presentation about how Boomer's Math Explosion works. It is a four week (or quarter) program. Each teacher chooses a goal for his or her students each quarter. When the students complete their goal, they get the prize associated with that week. The prizes are as follows:
WEEK 1 - An Explosion "Baller Band" and Buy 1 / Get 1 Free coupon from
Cold Stone Creamery
WEEK 2 - A Free Kid's Meal from Ixtapa Family Mexican Restaurant
WEEK 3 - A Free Kid's Meal from Canyons Restaurant
WEEK 4 - A Free Explosion Ticket and a Franz Bakery Cookie Card
(Good for one free cookie during each visit to a Franz Bakery Outlet for a year)
Sturlaugson then introduced Explosion center, Mike Jones. The 6'10" big man spoke briefly about the importance of math. Following his inspirational words, five volunteers were chosen to assist Jones. The lucky students dribbled around Boomer and threw a pass to Jones for the assist, as Jones dunked the ball.
Frank Wagner Elementary began Boomer's Math Explosion today. The other four schools will begin shortly with Chain Lake Elementary's Tip-Off Assembly scheduled for Friday, January 25th. Their Math Explosion will begin on January 28th.
