SAN DIEGO â Bonita Vista senior WR/DB Alex Ghebrasalassie led the Barons to a 25-21 victory over fifth-ranked Castle Park last Friday en route to sandiegoriptide.com High School Ironman of the Week honors for the week of October 18-19.
Ghebrasalassie, who has accepted a scholarship to UCLA, grabbed five passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns, one of five yards and the other from 51 yards out. Defensively, he posted six stops, a pass breakup and nabbed his school career record 10th interception. In addition, he returned a punt 35 yards that set up a score.
He will be honored prior to the Riptide's 2003 home opener with all the weekly award winners and the Ironman of the Year. The entire Bonita Vista varsity football team will receive tickets to that game to support their teammate.
Additional tickets to that game will be available at discounted rates for family members, friends and classmates. Riptide Head Coach Cree Morris will stop by the Barons' practice to present Ghebrasalassie a certificate and speak with the team later this week.
This Friday evening Bonita Vista travels to Montgomery. Kickoff is slated for 7:00pm.
To nominate a player for the "Ironman of the Week", please send in the player's name, high school, statistics and why that player should be nominated for that week's game.
Also, please include your name, address and phone number. You can fax it to 858.455.8379 (Attention Ironman) or e-mail us at ironman@sandiegoriptide.com. Nominations can come from players, coaches, family members, booster club members or fans. Everything will be verified before voting takes place.
At the end of the high school season a player will be selected as the "sandiegoriptide.com Ironman of the Year", and will be awarded a trophy at the Riptide's 2003 home opener. The qualifications will be contingent upon who had the best offensive and defensive season.
