Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, GA â The Capital City Bombers (18-11) took the final game of the series tonight at Historic Grayson Stadium beating the Savannah Sand Gnats 11-1, highlighted by a seven run sixth inning. Yunior Cabrera (2-1) picked up the win for the Bombers pitching six innings allowing an unearned run and struck out seven. Brian Walker pitched three innings in relief not allowing a run earning his first save. With the score already 3-1 and one out in the sixth inning, Corey Ragsdale was hit-by-a-pitch. The next batter Aaron Baldiris then walked to give the Bombers runners on first and second. After Ragsdale and Baldiris advanced a base on a fly out to right field by Alhaji Turay, left fielder John Toner hit a three-run home run to left field giving the Bombers a 6-1 lead. The Bombers would eventually score four more runs, with only one of those runs being earned because of three Sand Gnat errors, to go up 10-1. Altogether the Sand Gnats would commit six errors on the evening. The Bombers would add another run in the seventh on a RBI single by pinch hitter Edgar Rodriguez for the 11-1 advantage. The Sand Gnats lone run came in the second inning with no outs on a RBI grounder that was misplayed by Bomber shortstop Corey Ragsdale. Eight Sand Gnat hitters had a hit. Chad Chop, who entered the game at first base for the Sand Gnats in the top of the seventh, had a single in the eighth inning extending his hitting streak to ten games. Starter Josh Girdley (2-2) took the loss for the Sand Gnats. For the Bombers, Toner was 2 for 6 with two runs scored, three RBI, a stolen base, and his homer was his first of the season. Designated hitter Bobby Malek and second baseman Blake Whealy each had two hits. The Sand Gnats will travel to Augusta tomorrow opening up a three game series against the GreenJackets. The Sand Gnats will then play three on the road against the Hickory Crawdads before returning home on Monday, May 12 to open up an eight game home stand. The Sand Gnats will play four against the Lakewood Blue Claws and four against the Delmarva Shorebirds. May 12 is also Feed Your Face Monday presented by Connect Savannah and I-95. For $9.99 guests can enjoy a reserved seat and all-you-can-eat all night at the main concession stand.
