Bombers Get Back on Winning Side, Defeat Paints 3-1

June 10, 2011 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Dubois County Bombers News Release

Dubois County avenged Thursday night's loss to Chillicothe by beating them 3-1 Friday night. It was a great game from start to finish, with great pitching from both sides.

Lefty Sean Manaea started for the Bombers and pitched his way to his first win of the season. Manaea was dominant in his seven innings of work, giving up just four hits and striking out eight Chillicothe hitters. The Indiana State University pitcher had his stuff from the get-go, mixing up his fastballs and off-speed pitches very well. The Paints never seemed to get a good feel for Manaea, and when they did get a hit, Sean made sure to limit the damage.

The turning point in the ballgame came in the top of the seventh inning, when Chillicothe's Brian Suerdick smashed a pitch into deep left center. Bombers' center fielder Danny Poma raced back full speed and made an amazing grab just before he smashed into the OFS Brands sign on the wall. All of League Stadium erupted at the

"web gem," and this gave the offense the momentum that they needed.

In the bottom of the inning, the lineup came alive. T.J. Thomas started the inning with a single to center, followed by a Jon Hedges knock. With two on and one out, left fielder Aric Marquardt nailed a double down the left field line to finally lift the Bombers to a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Brian Norwood came to the plate in what proved to be the game's most decisive at bat. With the pressure on, Norwood lined a 3-1 pitch just out of the reach of the Chillicothe third baseman, scoring two more runs and giving Dubois County a 3-0 edge.

Left-hander Jordan Eich then relieved Manaea, and pitched a scoreless eighth. Shutdown closer Jake Rifkin closed down the Paints in the ninth, but did give up his first earned run this season. The Bombers move to 4-4 on the season, and Rifkin has executed a save in each of the four wins. The defending Prospect League Champion Chillicothe Paints move to 3-5.

Dubois County hits the road Saturday, with a trip to Springfield, IL to take on the Springfield Sliders. On Sunday, they will return home for their first meeting with the Richmond River Rats. Richmond currently leads the Eastern Division at 5-2.

The game on Sunday will start at 6:15 pm, and it will be a Family Sunday at League Stadium. Immediate families of three or more will receive a $1.00 discount off of each ticket. In addition, families of any size will pay no more than $20 total to get in the gate. The Bombers will be welcoming St. Mary's Catholic Church of Huntingburg as they celebrate 150 years of service!
