Dubois County Bombers News Release
May 31, 2011 - The Dubois County Bombers closed out their preseason schedule Tuesday with a 2-1 loss to the Jasper Reds. Petersburg native Bo Daves took the hill for the Reds, and pitched a fantastic game. Daves, a graduate of Indiana University Southeast, threw all nine innings for Jasper and gave up just one run, which was unearned. The Bombers' only run came on an error in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Defensively the Bombers were sharp, committing no errors. But that wasn't enough, as the game turned on one swing of the bat in the seventh inning. Southridge graduate Blake Broeker cracked a Kurt Kudrecki fastball over the right field wall with one man on base, giving the Reds a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Bombers had their chances to tie or even win the game. T.J. Thomas, of Hofstra University, crushed a ball that would've tied the game at two...if it had been fair. After Thomas reached on a hit and Jamie Skagerlind reached on an error, the Bombers looked to be back in the game. With runners on second and third, Kirby Campbell came up to bat with two outs and a chance to be the hero. The at bat ended up being an epic eleven pitch marathon, with Campbell fouling of a pitch into the catcher's mitt to end the game.
The Bombers will open the Prospect League season on Thursday evening, facing the Nashville Outlaws at 7:15 pm EDT. Included in the game will be a battle of brothers, with Bomber shortstop Grant Zawadzki facing off against his older brother Troy, who is also a shortstop with Nashville. Promotions for Thursday's game include Thirsty Thursday, where select beverages will be on sale. All 16 ounce bottles of adult beverages will be discounted to just $3.00!
The Huntingburg VFW will be on hand Thursday evening, providing a color guard for the opening ceremonies. Also at the game will be the Celebration Singers, who will sing the Star Spangled Banner and "Take Me Out to the Ballgame."
