HUNTINGBURG, Ind. - Spencer Sapp limited the Hannibal Cavemen to one run in eight innings, leading the Dubois County Bombers to a 6-1 victory Sunday night at League Stadium, to their second straight win.

"I felt like I threw pretty well," Sapp said. "I was able to command three pitches for the most part."

Sapp (2-2) worked through a rocky first two innings, permitting three base runners in each, and surrendered a run in the second after a single and a pair of walks loaded the bases with nobody out.

A double play off the bat of Hannibal shortstop Roberto Gonzalez scored Ryan Light, but that was all the Cavemen could manage.

Hannibal threatened in the first inning as well, but Dubois County center fielder Austin Nyman threw out Jake Mangler at home plate to end that threat.

"The defense was phenomenal," Sapp said. "They deserved the win tonight."

Sapp settled in in the third and finished his eight innings with six hits and four walks given up; he also struck out two Cavemen.

Hannibal starter Taylor Kaufman (2-1) allowed three runs - two earned - on six hits and two walks while striking out four through five innings. He took the loss

Kaufman had cruised through the first four innings, yielding only two singles in the first and a pair of walks in the fourth, before he ran into trouble in the fifth.

Drew Rosbottom notched his first hit with Dubois County in the form of a one-out double and advanced to third on a single by Ryan Simmons. Nyman then drove Rosbottom home with fielder's choice to second base.

Zach Long followed with a single, and both runners advanced during Jeff Zahn's at bat, Nyman to third on a stolen base and Long to second when Light, Hannibal's third baseman, dropped the throw from catcher Derek Fletcher. Zahn then singled to drive home both Nyman and Long.

Denys Delgado replaced Kaufman and worked a clean six and seventh before being replaced by Tyler Filliben to start the eighth.

Dubois County took advantage of the new pitcher. They loaded the bases with two outs before Chris Tavares walked to force in a run and Rosbottom ripped a two-run single to left to put the Bombers ahead 6-1.

Nick Green pitched a scoreless ninth for Dubois County.

"You want to play your best ball at the right time," Sapp said. "It seems like we're streaking at the right time with playoffs coming up."

The Bombers have the day off Monday before hosting the Springfield Sliders Tuesday, July 31, at 7:15 p.m.
