Bombers' Bats Come Alive Late in 5-4 Win
June 2, 2012 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Dubois County Bombers News Release
The Dubois County Bombers scored all five of their runs from the fifth inning on and staved off a Hannibal rally as they held on to beat the Cavemen 5-4 at Clemens Field Friday night in Hannibal, Miss.
Ty Simpson, who recorded a two-inning save two nights earlier in a 3-0 win over Springfield, earned the win with six innings of six-hit ball, walking three, and he surrendered only one earned run on a mammoth first-inning home run to Hannibal catcher Ian Sikes.
Simpson flirted with trouble quite a bit, some of it his fault and some from his defense, but he was aided greatly when Bombers catcher Kolin Conner threw out the first two batters in the third inning when each attempted to steal second.
Nick Smart pitched the seventh for the Bombers, allowing one run, and Nick Green earned the two-inning save.
Things got tricky in the ninth for Green as he let a 5-2 lead close to 5-4, but he induced a weak fly ball to center fielder Austin Nyman to retire Cavemen first baseman Randy Villa for the final out.
Hannibal pitcher Dylan Terrell started off well for the Cavemen, but Dubois County finally got to him in the fifth. Shortstop Frank Rawdow led off with a walk, and left fielder Scott Windler - playing his second game this year - crushed a double to dead center field, driving in Rawdow.
Windler would score on a Bo Ausmus ground ball after advancing to third on a weak ground out by Nyman.
Ausmus and designated hitter Dalton Rouleaux scored in the seventh inning. They led off with singles and advanced one base on a sacrifice by third baseman Cody Daily. Ausmus then scored on a sacrifice fly by right fielder Adam Guinn, and Conner followed to drive in Rouleaux with a two-out single.
The Cavemen would respond with a run in the bottom of the seventh and get two in the ninth, but ultimately, the Bombers escaped with a hard-fought, well-earned victory.
Dubois County plays in Terre Haute Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. before returning home to face those same Terre Haute Rex Sunday at 6:15 p.m. at League Stadium in Huntingburg.
