Butler BlueSox News Release

The BlueSox will pay tribute to the City of Butler's long baseball tradition this summer with a series of Throwback Sunday games that will feature a number of unique festivities.

Chief among them will be new uniforms modeled after those worn in the 1 930s and 1 940s.

"If you look around the [Prospect] League, we have one of the strongest baseball traditions of any city," said Larry Sassone, one of the six BlueSox' owners, "We wanted to honor that tradition in a big way this summer." Honda North has teamed up with the BlueSox to sponsor the series of games and make Butler the first team in the Prospect League with true throwback uniforms.

With high pants, the baggy off-white uniforms will have Yankees across the chest as a nod to the numerous teams over the years called the Butler Yankees, most notably the farm teams who played at Pullman Park from the mid-1 930s to the late-1 940s.

Butler will wear the uniforms during their eight Sunday home games this season. The games will also feature elements like older music and special food items.

"Our fans are well-versed in the history of the ballpark; it's a constant conversation piece at games throughout the summer," said Roger Snodgrass, another team owner. "We discussed some sort of retro memorabilia and the idea took off. We credit the fans for their enthusiasm about the Park's history, as well as Honda North for helping to make it a reality."

The new jerseys will be worn during each of the BlueSox eight Sunday home games.

Built in 1934, Kelly Automotive Park is the second-oldest ballpark in the Prospect League.

Minor league teams with the Indians, Yankees, and Tigers played at the Park from the 1930s to 1950s.

The Butler Yankees won championships in five of six seasons from 1 937-1 942 as members of the Pennsylvania State Association. Another edition of the Butler Yankees played in the Eagle County League in the 1 980s and 1 990s. Organized baseball teams have played in Butler since 1905, according to Baseball-Reference.

The Throwback Sunday games will start at 6:35pm, except for June 1 2 and July 24, which will begin at 1 :35pm and 4:05pm, respectively. A complete schedule is available at ButlerBlueSox.net/C.

Individual tickets for Throwback Sundays and all fireworks games are on sale now, online at ButlerBlueSox.net or by email to Tickets@ButlerBlueSox.net. Tickets for the balance of the games will go on sale soon. Opening day for the BlueSox' eighth season will be Thursday, May 26. The first Throwback Sunday will be Sunday, May 29, against the Champion City Kings.

Butler will retire their pinstripe uniforms and wear their white vest uniforms for the balance of their home games. The team will also debut darker gray pants for road games.

Adidas, the League's official merchandiser, will design the throwback uniforms.
