Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, CT- July 4, 2016) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (1-0, 31-40) defeated the York Revolution (0-1, 40-31) 3-2 Monday afternoon in a Fourth of July contest at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. Bridgeport begins the second half of the Atlantic League season on a high note, improving to 9-14 on the season in games decided by a single run. York drops to 15-20 on the road, as they play their first game after winning the Freedom Division of the Atlantic League in the first half of the season, clinching their sixth playoff berth in franchise history.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Jonathan Albaladejo (7-3) earned the win to become the first pitcher in the Atlantic League to amass seven wins on the season, and also registered his seventh quality start of 2016 and fifth in his last seven appearances overall. The right-hander allowed just two runs (one earned run) on six hits in seven innings on the mound, striking out five York batters. York Starting Pitcher Tony Pena (5-4) was tagged with the loss, giving up three runs (one earned run) in seven innings pitched, walking three and striking out one. Jose Veras picked up his second save of the season for the Bluefish, retiring the side in order in the top of the ninth inning.
The Bluefish got on the scoreboard first in the bottom half of the second inning against Pena, as Jonathan Galvez launched his team-leading seventh home run of the season over the left field wall, giving Bridgeport a 1-0 lead. The Revolution responded by putting up a run in the top of the third against Albaladejo to knot the game up at one, as Josh Wilson was driven home by Travis Witherspoon after Wilson singled and advanced all the way to third on a balk and a wild pitch. Adron Chambers crossed the plate for the 'Fish to give the home team their second lead of the afternoon in the home half of the fourth inning, as a sacrifice fly by Endy Chavez made it 2-1 Bridgeport.
The Bluefish added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Jose Gil laced a two-out RBI double off the glove of York's third baseman Michael Rockett, allowing Jonathan Galvez to score from third, giving Bridgeport a 3-1 cushion. The Revolution cut the deficit in half in the top of the seventh again off Albaladejo, as Jared Mitchell reached home following a throwing error by Josh Vitters that allowed Witherspoon to reach base, cutting the Bluefish lead to 3-2. The comeback effort by the Revolution would fall short, as Bridgeport's Veras and David Carpenter provided two scoreless innings of relief to give the 'Fish the win. The offensive efforts by Bridgeport were led by six players, as Chavez, Galvez, Vitters, Chambers, Luis Hernandez, and Jose Gil each registered a hit in the victory.
The Bluefish continue their three game series with the 2016 First Half Freedom Division Champion York Revolution on Tuesday July 5th at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard, with the first pitch slated for 7:12 P.M. It will be Gymnastics Night at the ballpark, as well as $2 Tuesday, where hot dogs and other selected concession items are just two dollars.
