Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

Newark, N.J., May 4, 2003 - The Bridgeport Bluefish picked up their first win of the 2003 season by virtue of handing the Newark Bears a 5-3 loss on Sunday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The win marked the first victory for the Bluefish under new manager Jose "Chico" Lind.

The Bluefish scored all five of its run in the second inning and then fended off a late Bears rally to secure the victory. In the second inning, the Bluefish (1-3) scored five runs on five hits as Tony Rodriguez connected on a two-run home run and Rolo Avila and Jeremy Booth all had RBI's.

Newark pitching then began to cruise, allowing just three hits in the final seven innings as starter Al Hawkins (0-1) and his relief Damon Ponce Deleon and Alberto Castillo managed to keep the Bluefish at bay and give their team a chance to win. Newark (3-1) got on the board in the fourth as Bryan Britt smashed his second round-tripper of the young season. The Bears scored twice more in the fifth on a RBI double by Wil Quintana and a RBI groundout to third by Francisco Lebron. Newark threatened again in the seventh as Rickey Henderson, who pinch hit for Mike Piercy walked and then advanced to third on a single by Jack Santora, had men on first and third with no outs.

Bridgeport starter Alex Lantayo (1-0) worked his way out of the jam and then gave way to Mike Guilfoyle who notched his first save of 2002. Lantayo went seven strong innings while giving up three runs on seven hits (4BB, 6K). Guilfoyle closed out the game by tossing two innings of scoreless relief (1H, 1BB, 3K).

Ben Candelaria and Jose Amado each collected two hits for the Bluefish.
