Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, Conn., May 18, 2003) â The Bridgeport Bluefish fell to the Nashua Pride, 4-2, in extra innings on Sunday afternoon before 3,630 fans at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
The tenth inning brought LHP Mike Guilfoyle (1-1, 1.0 IP, 1H, 2R, 2BB, 1K) to hold the Pride and give the Bluefish a chance at a win. However, Nashua's Curtis Pride used a sacrifice fly scoring Joe Kilburg, giving the Pride a 3-2 advantage. Nashua added an insurance run when the next batter Pat Howell singled home David Francia. Nashua brought in RHP David Rollandini for the tenth as three Bluefish batters reached bases. Nashua did not wait long before changing their pitching staff again, RHP Carlos Chantres came in to help the Pride by recording his second save of the season. The Bluefish failed to score in the tenth inning after having the bases loaded with no outs.
The Bluefish were fortunate early on as an error by Nashua's second baseman, Kilburg allowed Rolo Avila to score, giving the Bluefish a 1-0 lead. Kilburg misplayed a pop up by Tony Rodriguez. The âFish scored their second run as Nashua made a pitching change turning to LHP Kris Kozlowski while Bridgeport turned to Richard Almanzar. Almazar's sacrifice fly to right field gave Otanez enough time to score in the bottom of the sixth inning, increasing the Bluefish lead to 2-0.
Nashua's comeback came in the eighth inning as Cornett walked Chris Petersen. The Pride's next batter Ryan Van Horn doubled to center field to advance Petersen to third. Bridgeport's RHP Bobby Chouinard relieved Cornett, but allowed a single by Joe Kilburg that went under the outstretched glove of Bluefish first baseman Oreste Marrero, scoring both Petersen and Van Horn to knot the game at 2-2.
Bridgeport wasted an opportunity to score in the eighth inning when Ben Candelaria led off by stretching what should have been a single into a double. Nashua erased the Bluefish attempt to push the go-ahead run across the plate after Willis Otanez struck out and Jose Amado grounded into a double play.
Bridgeport pitcher Brad Cornett started and did not record a decision after a 7.1 inning showing, while allowing two runs on six hits, one walk while striking out seven. Nashua's Paxton Crawford started for the Pride but not factor into the decision while allowing two runs off eight hits, three walks, and no strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched. In an attempt to relieve Crawford, Nashua sent in Kozlowski for 1.1 innings, accumulated a strike out. The third pitching change for the Pride came with RHP Tommy Taylor came in to relieve Kozlowski. Taylor (1-1) eventually picked up the win after tossing 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.
Jose Offerman went 3-for-5 for the Bluefish while Rolo Avila and Tony Rodriguez also collected two hits apiece. D.J. Boston and Ryan Van Horn also had two hits apiece for Nashua. With the loss the Bluefish fall to 7-9 on the season while Nashua improves to 10-6. On Tuesday the Bridgeport Bluefish will continue their 15 game homestand against the Somerset Patriots. LHP Angel Miranda (0-0, 3.00) will take the mound for the Bluefish opposing Somerset's RHP Brett Jodie (1-1, 6.23).
