Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, Conn., September 5, 2002) - The First Half Northern Division Champion Bridgeport Bluefish handed the Somerset Patriots a 2-1 defeat on Thursday evening before 2,569 fans at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
Rolo Avila's (2-for-4, 2RBI) two-out, two-run double was the difference in the game, giving the Bluefish a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning. His second double in as many at-bats, a chopper down the third base line, scored Juan Rocha who reached on an error and Hector Kuilan who singled to center field.
The Bluefish had missed an opportunity to tie the game in the fourth inning after Avila led off with a double into the gap in left-center field. The next Bluefish batter, Tony Rodriguez, then hit a single through the hole between second and third base. Avila tried to score from second base and was tagged out at the plate by the Somerset catcher Sean Mulligan on an outfield assist by Patriot's leftfielder Jason Fennell.
The Patriots seized a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a RBI-double from Andy Diorio that scored Mike Glavine all the way from first base. William Pennyfeather had lined a single up the middle to lead off the inning, but was erased two batters later when Glavine reached on a fielder's choice.
Alan Mahaffey (12-7) picked up the win for the Bluefish, hurling 7.2 strong innings while surrendering just one run on seven hits while striking out three batters. Mike Guilfoyle recorded his 14th save of the season after tossing one scoreless inning of relief to close out the game. Robert Dodd (9-6) took the loss for the Patriots despite giving up two unearned runs on fours hits in eight innings (2BB, 5K).
Michael Warner (3-for-4) collected three hits, all singles, for the Patriots.
With the win, the Bluefish improve to 64-53 (28-26 in the second half) while the Patriots fall to 63-54 (26-27 in the second half). The Bluefish will resume play on Friday, September 6th at 6:35 p.m. when Bridgeport begins a three-game series against the Newark Bears. On Friday, RHP Brad Cornett (12-7, 3.57) will take the mound for the Bluefish to oppose the Bear's RHP Billy Coleman (0-0, 0.00).
