BlueCats Win, Control Playoff Destiny

Evansville BlueCats News Release

EVANSVILLE, IN: The Evansville BlueCats (5-8) came away with an important road victory last weekend against Ohio Valley (2-11), beating the Greyhound 44-20. The win is Evansville's third over Ohio Valley this season as the BlueCats sweep the season series. The win also gives the BlueCats two victories in a row and moves the team one step closer to claiming a playoff spot in the UIF Eastern conference. Evansville is now just one game behind the Bloomington Extreme (6-7) with two games remaining. Evansville hosts Bloomington on July 14th in what could be a game to determine who gets the final UIF playoff spot.

Evansville controls its own playoff destiny with two games remaining in the regular season. Should the BlueCats win their final two games, it would put the BlueCats record at (7-8). If Evansville can beat Bloomington in the final home game on July 14th, Evansville would own the head-to-head tiebreaker against the Extreme in the event that both teams finish in a tie with a (7-8) overall record. Bloomington (6-7) hosts the Billings Outlaws (8-4) this week.

Last Saturday's game against the Greyhounds got off to an unusual start when Ohio Valley was awarded 2 points on safety against the BlueCats on the opening kickoff. BlueCats kicker Nate Meyer kicked a low line drive kickoff which hit an Ohio Valley player on the front line of their kickoff return unit. The ball then sailed off to the side and over the wall, out of bounds. Following a lengthy discussion by the officials, Ohio Valley was awarded a safety and two points on the bizarre play, when the officials determined that the ball went out of bounds in the end zone. Evansville trailed 2-0.

The BlueCats didn't let the unusual start slow them down, however. Dale Jennings scored on the teams first possession to put the BlueCats in front for good as the offense went on to put up 30 of their 44 points in the first half and held a 30-12 lead at the half.

Dale Jennings scored two rushing touchdowns for the BlueCats, and Levron Williams and Odest Shannon added one touchdown reception each. The BlueCats defense scored twice as well, one of those came when linebacker John Winchester fell on a fumble in the end zone and the other on a 50-yard AJ Bryant interception return. The 50-yard interception return is a new team record and ties the UIF league record.

Evansville BlueCats Head Coach John Hart said, "Our defense played outstanding tonight and actually outscored the other team until the final two minutes of the game. John Winchester and Johnny Brown were dominating defensively. The offensive line did a great job up front for us and allowed the offense to make some big plays."

The BlueCats road trip continues this week when they travel St. Charles, Missouri to take on the River City Rage this Saturday, July 7th. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm. This game can be heard live on News-Talk 1280 WGBF-AM and on the web at 103GBFrocks.com. The BlueCats return home on Saturday, July 14th when they welcome the Bloomington Extreme.
