EVANSVILLE, IN: The Evansville BlueCats defeated the Fort Wayne Freedom 43-37 to sweep the 2006 series with their in-state and UIF East Division rival and keep their 2006 UIF Playoff hopes alive. The BlueCats were able to bounce back from last week's disappointing loss to the Bloomington Extreme with a win over Fort Wayne to improve to (4-7) on the season. The score stayed close with Evansville in the lead against for most of the night. Fort Wayne took their final lead of the contest at 30-29 on a field goal with 5:11 to go in the 3rd quarter. Evansville answered on the next possession with a 25-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the drive and followed it with an interception by the BlueCats Vernon Turner to set up another BlueCats touchdown to put Evansville way out in front 43-30 on the back to back touchdowns. The Freedom managed to score again, but the BlueCats lead was never threatened as they held on to win in front of the home crowd. The win is Evansville's fourth of the season, and third straight win in the series against Fort Wayne dating back to the 2004 season.
Running back Dale Jennings rushed for 3 touchdowns in the game on only 13 rushing yards. He also had two receptions for 4 yards and 2 kick returns for 21 yards.
Quarterback Aaron Leak went 14-23 with 108 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. His favorite receiver was Tyrone Walker who caught a personal best 6 passes for 72 yards. Walker also scored a touchdown on a 25-yard strike from Leak in the 3rd quarter.
The BlueCats defense was led by safety Vernon Turner with 8 total tackles and an interception. Damien Jones added 7.5 tackles and John Winchester made 7 tackles including a tackle for loss. Defensive end Kevin Rees made 4 tackles and 2 sacks while nose tackle Johnny Brown added 4.5 tackles and one sack. Wide receiver Levander Segars made 3 solo tackles on special teams duty.
Brad Kunz blocked a field goal in the 2nd quarter giving him 4 blocked kicks on the season, he already held the BlueCats team record for blocked kicks in a season. 4 blocked kicks in a season extends his team record and ties the previous league record set last year.
Kicker Ton-Ton Luzayadio was 2-5 in field goals and a perfect 5-5 in extra point kicks in the game. Luzayadio hasn't missed a PAT attempt since the first quarter of the BlueCats game on back on May 20th against Fort Wayne. He's made his last 16 straight extra point kicks.
