Evansville BlueCats News Release

EVANSVILLE, IN: The Evansville BlueCats lost to the Rock River Raptors 47-36 on Saturday night in the first game of the season for both teams. Saturday's game was the only scheduled meeting between the teams this season.

Evansville fell behind 9-0 in the first quarter and couldn't close the gap despite 24 second half points. The Raptors were able to find some success in the passing game, scoring on long touchdown passes of 35, 35, and 23 yards. The BlueCats defense held Raptors running back Randy Bell to only 18 yards rushing on 16 attempts.

The BlueCats offense was led by receivers Levron Williams and Sean Bennett. Williams caught 8 passes for 101 yards and 2 touchdowns, and Sean Bennett added 5 catches for 63 yards. Bennett also scored the BlueCats first touchdown of the season on a two yard run in the second quarter.

Quarterback Dan Mettlach was 15 of 29 passing for 168 yards. He threw for two touchdowns and one interception.

Running back Dale Jennings added 21 yards and a touchdown on 6 rushing attempts. His fourth quarter touchdown moved him into first place all-time on the teams career scoring list.

Joel Stubblefield scored his first career touchdown when he caught a touchdown pass from Mettlach in the third quarter, but the play was overturned when the officials ruled him to be an eligible receiver despite lining as a fullback in the backfield on the play.

The BlueCats defense was anchored by a strong performance from linebacker John Winchester who led all players with 8.5 tackles, including a league leading 4 tackles for a loss. His 4 tackles for a loss in a single game ties the BlueCats single game record. His 8.5 total tackles and cornerback Carnell Green's 7.5 tackles rank second and third in the league respectively.

This week the BlueCats will hit the road as they embark on a 3 game road stint when they travel to face the Ohio Valley Greyhounds (0-1) on Sunday, April 2nd. Last week, Ohio Valley lost to Lexington 38-24 at Rupp Arena in the Horsemen's home opener.

Kickoff for Sunday's game is scheduled for 5:30pm Evansville time. This game will be the home opener for the Greyhounds, who play their home games at the WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, West Virginia. BlueCats road games can be heard on ESPN Radio 94.9.

The BlueCats return home on Saturday, April 22nd, when they welcome the Lexington Horsemen to Robert's Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:05pm. For tickets, please contact the Roberts Stadium box office.
