Evansville BlueCats News Release
Heading south to Louisiana to play the Atlantic South leading Houma Bayou Bucks, the Evansville Bluecats knew they would have to overcome some obstacles to come away with the victory. The Bluecats did just that in ending the Bucks' seven game winning streak, overcoming key injuries to 2 defensive lineman and 3 deficits of 10 points or more, to earn a hard fought 51-49 win.
Down 31-41 with 13:20 to go, rookie defensive back Matt Jackson and veteran running back Michael Cosey took over the game. After Jarvis Dunn's 4-yard TD at the beginning of the 4th quarter gave the Bayou Bucks the 10 point advantage, Cosey capped off a 6 play, 4:34 drive with a 1-yard TD to the tighten the score to 38-41. The ensuing kickoff saw Dunn return the ball to the Bluecats' 5-yard line before Jackson forced a Dunn fumble and recovered it as well to give the âCats the ball back with 8:46 left in the game. Cosey took the ball and kept on pounding at the Bucks defense, ending a 45-yard drive with a 6-yard TD to give the âCats their 4th lead of the night.
Jackson stepped up again on the next Houma possession, intercepting a Doug Coleman pass and returning it to the Houma 23-yard line with a little over 4 minutes to play in the game. Cosey scored again on a 3-yard run to give his team a 10-point cushion with only 1:16 left in regulation.
After a late touchdown by the Bucks closed the score to 51-49, Cosey again came up big for Evansville, covering Houma's onside kick attempt with 40 seconds left in the game to preserve the victory.
The Bluecats will head to Lexington, Kentucky this Saturday, May 29th to face the Lexington Horsemen in a critical Atlantic North Division match-up. The Bluecats (4-4) stand 1 game behind the Horsemen (5-3) and 1 ½ games behind Show-Me (6-3) in the race for the Atlantic North crown. A fan bus will be heading to Lexington to help support the Bluecats in their quest for a championship. Cost is only $40 and includes transportation, a ticket to the game, refreshments and snacks. Call 491-9401 or email at bradbenic@evansvillebluecats.com by Wednesday, May 26th to reserve your spot on the bus.
