BlueCats AJ Bryant Named Player of the Week
July 6, 2006 - United Indoor Football Association (UIF)
Evansville BlueCats News Release
The Evansville BlueCats are pleased to announce that defensive back AJ Bryant has been honored as the UIF Defensive Player of the Week for Week 15. Last week in the BlueCats 28-26 victory over the Ohio Valley Greyhounds, Bryant led all players with 9 tackles in the game, including a tackle for a loss. His biggest play of the night came on the final play of the game. The Greyhounds had the ball on fourth and goal inside the BlueCats two yard line when Bryant intercepted a pass on the goal line from Greyhounds quarterback Matt Kohn. The interception came with no time left on the clock and sealed the win for the BlueCats, while also clinching the team a spot in the 2006 UIF playoffs.
AJ Bryant arrived in Evansville just 3 weeks ago and has already made a major impact to the BlueCats defense. Bryant has made 13.5 tackles and 3 interceptions in only 3 games so far in 2006.
Bryant is making his professional debut with the BlueCats this season. He was one of the defensive leaders last fall for the Georgia Southern football team that finished the season ranked #9 in the USA Today NCAA Division I-AA final poll. He started at free safety in all 12 games as a senior in 2005, making 59 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, one sack, and lead the team with 4 interceptions and 5 pass break ups. He returned one of his interceptions for 74 yards and a touchdown in a game against Morehead State, which game him 253 career interception return yards, a new school record. He was also the holder on extra point and field goal kicks. AJ was scouted and placed through the Indoor Football Scouting Bureau.
Sioux Falls quarterback Terrance Bryant was named UIF Offensive Player of the Week for Week 15 and Lexington defensive back William Mulder was named Special Teams Player of the Week.
This Saturday, Bryant and the rest of the Evansville BlueCats will finish the regular season against the Sioux Falls Storm at Sioux Falls Arena. The BlueCats have already clinched a playoff berth and currently sit in a tie with Omaha for the #4 seed in the upcoming playoffs. Due to the tiebreaker system, the BlueCats exact seeding will not be known until the conclusion of all the Week 16 games from around the league. Evansville can host a first round playoff game, a first in team history, with a win over Sioux Falls and an Omaha loss to Fort Wayne.
