Evansville BlueCats News Release

EVANSVILLE, IN: The Evansville BlueCats are pleased to announce the signings of four more players who have joined the team for the 2007 season. The group includes one returning player and three newcomers. The BlueCats would like to welcome back DT Johnny Brown as well as welcome the new arrivals, which include OL Tony Bonds from Ole Miss, WR/DB/KR Richard Johnson from Virginia Tech, and RB Kyle Mayhugh from Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Evansville BlueCats Head Coach John Hart said, "We're really pleased with this group of signings. Johnny is a tremendous player who improved a lot during the season and I feel like he was one of the best defensive tackles in the league at the end of last season. We're also happy to get Tony who's not only a good football player, but he's good enough to play several different positions for us. Richard is another exciting player with incredible speed and he has the talent to play either offense or defense. Kyle is a change of pace type back, this guy is tough, he's a bigger back that can block or pick up some tough yards and we're excited to see what he can contribute."

Last season Johnny Brown started in 13 games at nose tackle for the BlueCats and was a key part of the BlueCats run defense that held opponents to a league best 2.8 yards per carry last season. While anchoring the middle of the BlueCats defensive line, Brown totaled 29.5 tackles, with 8 of those being tackles for a loss. He also recorded 3.5 sacks and blocked a kick.

The BlueCats have also signed offensive lineman Tony Bonds from the University of Mississippi. Bonds was an incredibly versatile lineman at Ole Miss, seeing time at center and both right and left guard. The 6'4" 320 pound Bonds spent time with the Tennessee Valley Vipers a year ago, and was an All-State selection coming out of high school in Russellville, Alabama.

Richard Johnson played college football at Virginia Tech and was a member of Virginia Tech's 2004 ACC Championship team that played in the Sugar Bowl vs. Auburn. He played wide receiver and returned punts and kicks for the Hokies during his 4-year career. As a sophomore in 2001, he returned a kickoff 91 yards for his first career touchdown on the road at Miami. He led the team in kick return yards as a freshman and sophomore, and finished his sophomore season 4th on the team with 754 all-purpose yards, behind only future NFL players Kevin Jones, Lee Suggs, and Bryan Randall. Last season, Johnson played indoor football in another league. Coming out of high school, Johnson was listed as the #5 wide receiver and #28 overall prospect in the nation. Johnson played at quarterback, running back, wide receiver, free safety, strong safety, cornerback, and returned kicks during his career at Milford Mill High School in Maryland where he accumulated 41 career passing touchdowns, 28 rushing touchdowns, and 3 kick return touchdowns. He earned All-Baltimore-Metro and All-State honors as a junior and senior.

Kyle Mayhugh played running back for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. As a senior in 2003, Mayhugh rushed for 361 yards and 3 touchdowns, and was used primarily as a blocking back. The 5'11" 245 pound Mayhugh also played football overseas for the Sea City Storm in Rauna, Finland.

Brown, Bonds, Johnson, and Mayhugh were scouted and placed by the coaches and staff of the indoor football scouting bureau.
