Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
(York, PA.) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (10-19) lost game two against the York Revolution (15-12) 7-5, with a late rally falling just short.
A pair of runs in the bottom of the first gave York an early lead on the morning. Jared Mitchell singled to start the day, but was caught stealing for the first out. Alexi Casilla then hit his second homerun of the series, a solo shot to open the scoring on the day. Welington Dotel reached on a walk, stealing second two batters later. Zach Wilson then doubled with two outs in the inning, scoring Dotel to grab a 2-0 lead.
The Blue Crabs responded with one of their own on a Cory Vaughn solo homerun in the second. The Revs immediately got one back in the bottom half of the inning, regaining their two-run lead. Jose Cuevas reached on a single, moving into scoring position when Travis Witherspoon drew a walk. Tyler Clark followed with another single, scoring Cuevas from second, before three flyouts limited the damage.
After a scoreless third, the offenses both came back with two runs in the fourth. Devon Rodriguez led off the inning with a single, before Vaughn doubled up on his day with another homerun. The two-run shot gave Vaughn the team's first multi-homerun game on the year.
A pair of doubles plated one in the bottom of the 4th for the Revs, as Cuevas and Clark connected again. A walk and a wild pitch put runners on the corners for Casilla with one down. He came through with an RBI single, scoring Clark to extend the lead back out to two runs.
After a pair of scoreless innings, the bottom of the sixth entailed more scoring for the Revs. A walk, an error, and a passed ball put Clark on third with nobody out. A walk to Mitchell runners on the corners for Casilla, who delivered once more. The switch-hitter brought home both runners with a double, his third and fourth RBIs of the day.
The Blue Crabs looked to rally back late, starting with a run in the eighth. Frank Martinez doubled to begin the inning, moving up to third on another passed ball. A sacrifice fly from Angelo Songco scored Martinez, cutting the deficit to three runs before the game headed to the ninth.
The offense continued to fight back in the ninth, as Vaughn stayed hot with a double to get under way. A single from Jose Gonzalez put runners on the corners, and two batters later Johnny Bladel walked to load the bases with one out. Another walk followed as Vaughn came across to score and Edwin Garcia headed to first as the go-ahead run. Junior Rincon (S,5) bounced back with back-to-back strikeouts, stranding the bases loaded and narrowly escaping with the 7-5 victory for York.
The Blue Crabs return to action Thursday, May 31st for the series finale against the Revolution. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 P.M. on Thursday at PeoplesBank Ballpark.
