Bloomington Edge News Release
Bloomington, IL. - The Bloomington Edge continued to roll through their summer season Saturday night as they obliterated the Elite Indoor Football All-Stars by a score of 63-8. The Edge improved to 3-0 in a game they dominated from the national anthem until the post game autograph session.
On the first offensive possession for the EIF All-Stars, Edge defensive end Brad Wolf sacked their quarterback in the end zone for a safety. Bloomington was up 2-0 just 37 seconds into the game, and that was the closest the score would be all night.
Edge standout wide receiver Marcus Lewis caught a 30 yard touchdown pass and a four yard touchdown pass from quarterback QuinTon Fonvile on the next two possessions. Tack on a five yard touchdown run by Bloomington rookie running back Shola Olateju, and the Edge were up 22-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was more of the same for the Edge. First Bloomington wide receiver Dlron Simmons scored on an 11 yard run, and then the Edge defense took a turn finding the end zone. Defensive end David Powell had a three yard scoop-and-score for his first career touchdown with the Edge. Powell is from Springfield, Illinois and played collegiately at MacMurry College.
"Coach Fornelli really emphasizes take-aways. Our defense can put points on the board while also preventing them," Powell said about his touchdown. "Expect to see points from our defense every game. We have playmakers at every position. I love playing with these guys."
It looked like the teams would be going into halftime with the Edge up 36-0, but with 16 seconds left in the second quarter running back Martez Turner ripped of a 28 yard touchdown. Offensive lineman Drew McDonald had a crushing block that opened a huge hole for Turner. He made a quick cut to escape a linebacker and out ran the rest of the EIF All-Stars for the score. The Edge went in to halftime with a commanding 43-0 lead.
The EIF All-Stars finally found the end zone late in the 3rd quarter, but Dom Stevenson, Mitch Globe, and Olateju each scored rushing touchdowns for the Edge in the second half resulting in a very lopsided Bloomington victory.
Defensively, Edge newcomer David Alvarez had two interceptions, and Jeremiah Mitchell and Trey Garvey had one each. Wolf and Powell each had a sack, and Mitch Globe led the team with six tackles (three for a loss). Rookie linebacker John DePalma had 4 tackles (two for a loss).
The Edge will be back in action Saturday July 28th when they take on the New England Bobcats at 7pm inside Grossinger Motors Arena. Tickets are available at www.bloomingtonedge.net.
