Blizzard Roster Takes Shape

August 9, 2013 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Brookings Blizzard News Release

The Brookings Blizzard completed their final camp of the summer this week in Alexandria, MN. Approximately 115 players participated in the three-day camp, traveling to Minnesota from all over the country. The talent pool was narrowed to 30 players who will report to Brookings the first weekend of September.

"We're excited about the team we've put together," said Blizzard head coach Cory Laylin. "Guys came out hungry to earn their spot on the team and it showed all weekend."

The Blizzard will have a lot of holes to from last year's roster that relied heavily on veteran talent. More than half the final roster was made up of '92 birth years making those players ineligible to play another year of junior hockey. Four players from last year's team have made NCAA Division I commitments for the upcoming season, and the majority of the others have committed to play for other NCAA programs.

"We are going to be a faster team this year with a lot of skill up front," added Laylin. "On the defensive side I believe we will have more talent top to bottom. That's weird to say when you lose a player like Drew Brevig who was one of the best defenders in the league last season."

Brevig, a native of Lakeville, MN, has committed to play for Ohio State University this fall.

The young, but talented roster, will have a short time to prepare for the 2013-2014 season. Player are scheduled to report to Brookings on September, 2nd and are scheduled to play an exhibition game against the Alexandria Blizzard, Brookings' NA3HL affiliate, on Friday, September 6th at the Larson Ice Center in Brookings. A week later the team will host the Aberdeen Wings in their second preseason exhibition game at home. Both games are schedule to start at 7:15p.m.

On Saturday, September 14th the Blizzard will travel to Grand Forks, ND for either third and final exhibition game against the Minot Minotauros. That game will be played at the historic Ralph Engelstad Arena, home of the University of North Dakota hockey team.

The Blizzard will start the regular season at the NAHL Showcase, September 18-21 in Blaine, MN.

The 2013-2014 regular season home opener will be Friday, September 27th at the Larson Ice Center in Brookings against the Aberdeen Wings.

Season tickets are on sale now by calling the Blizzard office at 605-592-9114. Individual game tickets will go on sale at a later date.
