Bakersfield Blitz News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. - Nick Onaindia scored a touchdown, blocked two kicks, recorded 2.5 sacks and forced three safeties to lead the Bakersfield Blitz (5-9) to a 56-33 victory over the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings (3-11) on Friday night at the Rabobank Arena. The Blitz finish at home with a 4-4 record this season. Their final two games of the season are on the road.
The Blitz jumped out of the gates early, rolling up a 24-8 lead in the first quarter. Onaindia forced two safeties - one on an intentional grounding in the end zone and the other a blocked field goal out of the back of the end zone - and scored a rushing touchdown to provide 10 of those points himself. Rennard Reynolds caught his team-leading 18th touchdown pass of the season as well.
In the second quarter the Blitz added two more scores, with Nathan Munson catching his 10th scoring pass and QB Jason Thomas running one in from eight yards out. Battle Wings QB Brent Rawls threw a pair of touchdown passes to pull his club to a 38-21 deficit going into halftime. Speaking of halftime, history was made - as was a new Guinness Book of World Records. Bakersfield's own George the Giant established a new record for bricks smashed on the chest of a man lying on a bed of nails. While lying on a platform of 12-inch spikes, George had 37 bricks weighing a total of 1,128.5 pounds pulverized by sledgehammers.
The third quarter saw Bossier-Shreveport rally. Bakersfield was completely held off the board and the Battle Wings crept within five points. A 45-yard field goal by K Brian Hazelwood, a sack of Thomas in the end zone and a 3-yard plunge by Rawls made it 38- 33 Bakersfield heading into the final stanza.
But Bossier-Shreveport could get no closer. Dan Burnett nailed a 22-yard field goal and Reynolds added his second touchdown catch of the season to make it 47-33. On the ensuing kickoff, the Battle Wings failed to retrieve the kick and Blitz OL/DL Phil Blackmon smothered it to regain possession. Harbert Briscoe caught a touchdown pass and Nick Onaindia picked up his final sack of the game for a safety to account for the final margin. In a move which may or may not violate af2 policy, Onaindia was named both the U.S. Army Ironman of the Game and the ADT Defensive Player of the Game for his efforts.
The Blitz head down to San Diego next week then and finish on the road against Rio Grande Valley for the last week of the season. Both remaining games can be heard on KGEO AM 1230, with next week's match up in San Diego slated for Saturday, July 24th at 7:00 p.m. Log on to www.bakersfieldblitz.com to stay up-to-date with the latest team information.
