Bakersfield Blitz News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. â Rennard Reynolds, WR for the Blitz, outscored the Arkansas Twisters by himself, pulling in four touchdown grabs in a 49-21 victory for the Bakersfield Blitz in front of 5,404 fans at Centennial Garden on Saturday night.
The Twister had the lead for most of the first quarter, as an interception of Bakersfield QB Chad Elliott was returned for a 20-yard touchdown by the visitors. A failed extra point on an Eric Mahanke touchdown held the lead for Arkansas until the final minute of the quarter. OL/DL Kevin "Catfish" Carroll hauled down Arkansas QB Henry Young in the end zone for a safety to make it 8-7. The Blitz never trailed again.
An early injury to OS Steve Wofford thrust Reynolds into the spotlight, and he responded. He hauled in 115 of his 176 yards receiving in the first half alone, recording three touchdown catches in the second quarter as Bakersfield opened up a 36-13 lead at the half. Nick Onaindia also punched in a two-yard touchdown run with just 22 seconds remaining in the second quarter, contributing to the advantage.
Defense was the name of the game in the third quarter. For the first time in a Blitz game all season, neither team scored, holding the 23-point advantage entering the final stanza. Young found the end zone with his only touchdown throw of the night to make it 36-21 with just over 11 minutes remaining in the game. He hit Kevin Williams, who spent the first three weeks of the season as the starting QB, for a game-high 39 yard score. But Bakersfield would not let up. Reynolds added his fourth score of the night with seven minutes left, and Mahanke pulled in his second touchdown pass of the game in the final minute to make it 49-21.
Bakersfield improves to 3-2 on the season, keeping pace with the first-place Hawai'ian Islanders, who defeated Bossier-Shreveport on Friday night to improve to 4-1. Arkansas dropped to 1-3 with the loss. Elliott threw for 284 yards and six touchdowns in the win.
After a bye week next weekend, the Blitz line up against the San Diego Riptide on May 15th at 7:00pm. That night features an Armed Forces Day Jersey Off Our Backs raffle and auction to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Bakersfield, sponsored by Real Rock 93.1 and Bright House Networks. Everyone in attendance will also receive a pair of Blitz Thunderstix.
