Blitz rolls over Frenzy for bragging rights

BAKERSFIELD, CA (June 1, 2002) – In a match-up for bragging rights to central California, the Bakersfield Blitz demoralized the Fresno Frenzy 70-16 to win the "Battle of Highway 99" in front of 5,793 fans at the Centennial Garden.

Fresno jumped out to an early 10-0 lead before Bakersfield scored 70 unanswered points over the next three and a half quarters. The Blitz got on the board for the first time, 12 minutes into the game, when Nathan Buergey rumbled into the end zone from nine yards out to make the score 10-7 in favor of Fresno.

The Blitz then went to work in the second quarter, scoring 27 points. York Frierson started it off with a 38-yard touchdown reception from Chad Elliott. Steve Wofford followed that up with a three-yard scoring run to make the score 21-10 for Bakersfield.

Newly acquired receiver Teddy Wilson got in on the scoring as well, when he made a 13-yard touchdown reception followed by a 28-yard strike to Vaughn Corley late in the second quarter that sent the Blitz into halftime with a 34-10 advantage.

Bakersfield picked up where it left off in the second half, scoring 14 third quarter points and 22 fourth-quarter points. Wofford caught two touchdown receptions within 1:30 of each other in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 61-10 with ten minutes remaining in the game. He finished the game with six receptions for 92 yards and two touchdowns and two rushes for seven yards and two touchdowns.

Game MVP Chad Elliott threw for 243 yards and six touchdowns, while completing 18 of 21 passes before he was pulled from the game midway through the fourth quarter. WR/DB Ryan Sloth was named the game's Ironman for his efforts, making seven receptions for 54 yards and a touchdown on offense and two tackles, a forced fumble and 2 pass deflections on defense. DS Delvin Myles was named the ADT Defensive Player of the Game with 8.5 tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Bakersfield amassed 325 total yards of offense in the game, while Fresno only mustered 141 yards. The Blitz is now 6-2 on the season and a perfect 5-0 in division games.
