
Blitz DS Alex Wallace Named ADT Defensive Player of the Year

Bakersfield Blitz DS ALEX WALLACE has been named the ADT Defensive Player of the Year, as selected by a vote of af2 head coaches and beat writers.
Wallace, in his second af2 season out of San Jose State University, recorded a league-high 11 interceptions during the regular season. He ranked fourth in passes defended with 37, which included his 11 picks and 26 pass breakups. Wallace also led the team in tackles with 51.0 (44 UA, 14 AT) total tackles and was third on the squad with two fumble recoveries.
The 5-foot-11, 187-pounder's best individual game performance came in a Week 5 road win against Stockton. Wallace recorded 1.5 tackles and an af2 season-high three interceptions to help the Blitz spoil Stockton's first-ever af2 home game. He earned league recognition as the ADT Defensive Player of the Week for his effort. Wallace was also named ADT Defensive Player of the Game three times in 2006.
Wallace was recently named to the National Conference All-af2 First Team. He earned Second Team honors as a rookie in 2005. Last year Wallace ranked second in the af2 in interceptions with 11 and in passes defended with 42. He also led the team with 65.0 total tackles (56 UA, 18 AT). In just two seasons, Wallace is tied for fifth in league history with 22 career interceptions.
Bakersfield qualified for the playoffs this season after a 9-7 regular season mark. The No. 6 seed Blitz, bolstered by Wallace and their defense, advanced to the semifinals thanks to a 45-37 first round win at No. 3-ranked Central Valley. Wallace had game-highs in tackles (9.0) and pass breakups (6) in the victory.
Anchored by Wallace, the Bakersfield defense led the league in pass defense (194.8 yards per game), total defense (220.2 yards per game) and touchdowns allowed (87). The Blitz also ranked in the top-five in interceptions (T2nd -26) and points allowed (T4th - 44.9).
Wallace joins an impressive list of past Defensive Player of the Year winners that includes Dahnel Singfield (Memphis - 2005), Traco Rachel (Laredo - 2004), Kahlil Carter (Arkansas - 2003), Kelly Snell (Tennessee Valley - 2002), Earnest Certain (Tallahassee - 2001) and Cornelius Coe (Quad City - 2000).
