Utah Blaze News Release
SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Blaze QB Nick Stephens has agreed to a contract with the Dallas Cowboys, the franchise announced today. Stephens becomes the fifth member of the Blaze to sign an NFL deal this offseason, joining OL JerMarcus Hardrick (New Orleans Saints), DB Dion Turner (Miami Dolphins), WR LaMark Brown (Minnesota Vikings) and DB Otis Merrill (Green Bay Packers).
"I am very thankful for the opportunity to play with the Blaze. I was really looking forward to working with the coaching staff and players," Stephens stated. "[Playing for Dallas] is a phenomenal opportunity and situation. I look forward to learning from some of the brightest minds in the game."
"This is a fantastic opportunity for Nick," said Head Coach Ron James. "We knew he had all the physical tools to play in the NFL, and we're excited he's getting the chance to showcase his ability."
Stephens (6-3, 235, Tarleton State) was originally assigned to the Blaze on November 9, 2012. Prior to his tenure with Utah, Stephens signed with the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent in 2012, where he played in two preseason games and completed 4-of-5 pass attempts (80%) for 24 yards.
In two seasons at Tarleton State University, Stephens started 17 games and threw for 4,524 yards with 27 touchdowns, adding five more scores on the ground. As a senior in 2011, he produced Division II's 15th-ranked passing offense, as the Texans posted an average of 290.64 yards per game through the air.
Stephens originally attended the University of Tennessee following a standout prep career at Flower Mound High School (TX). He opened his collegiate career by throwing 106 consecutive passes without an interception. Stephens would go on to throw for 982 yards with five touchdowns in three seasons with the Volunteers.
